Destin Daniel Cretton Says Fans Will Have “A Lot More Than Just Sadie Sink to Talk About”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not trying to follow Spider-Man: No Way Home by simply making everything bigger. Director Destin Daniel Cretton wants to take Peter Parker deeper.
The new film finds Peter fighting crime full-time in a world that no longer remembers him. The pressure of watching his former friends move forward without him begins to trigger an emotional and physical change that Peter may not have the power to control. That transformation could also be the only thing capable of stopping a mysterious new threat to New York City.
The danger comes from a powerful villain that Peter can sense but cannot see. Cretton takes over the franchise after bringing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and helping launch Wonder Man.
His latest Marvel project stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, and Mark Ruffalo. During a conversation with Nerdtropolis, Cretton discussed the isolation that drew him to Peter Parker’s story and revealed that a large battle featuring several classic villains was removed from the movie.
The filmmaker also explained why Punisher and Savage Hulk are more than exciting additions. Both characters reflect possible directions Peter could take as he struggles to maintain control. Cretton also addressed the mystery surrounding Sadie Sink, his emotional approach to action, and the similarities he sees between Spider-Man and Naruto.

Why Peter Parker’s Isolation Became the Gift of Brand New Day
Cretton described taking control of Spider-Man as a tremendous opportunity. Even after working within the MCU, the filmmaker still sounds amazed that he gets to guide one of the world’s most recognizable heroes.
“It’s obviously a huge privilege,” Cretton told Nerdtropolis. “I feel like the luckiest kid in the world to be able to do this as my job in general, and then to be able to work on this movie with this character, with actors like Tom Holland and Zendaya and Jacob and Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo.”
He added, “It’s unbelievable that this is my job.”
The Gift Left by No Way Home
The ending of No Way Home provided Cretton with an unusually emotional starting point. Peter allowed Doctor Strange to erase him from everyone’s memory. The sacrifice protected the world, but it also removed Peter from the lives of MJ and Ned.
Rather than viewing that ending or the movie’s time jump as a difficult burden, Cretton saw an opportunity. “I wouldn’t call it a burden,” he said. “I would actually call it a gift.”
Peter’s emotional condition following No Way Home was also a major reason Cretton agreed to direct the movie. “I think the gift of this movie was where Peter Parker was left off at the end of the last movie,” Cretton explained. “That’s the reason why I signed on to do this movie because it just felt so relatable to me.”
Peter Parker’s Life of Isolation
Peter is surrounded by the noise, energy, and millions of residents who make up New York City. However, he has never been more alone. Cretton described it as “the feeling of being in a city like New York, surrounded by millions of people, and still feeling entirely alone.”
That experience is not limited to superheroes. The director connected Peter’s struggle to the moments of loss and transition that most people eventually face. “I think we’ve all been through tragic times in our life, or times of loss, or moments where we’ve had to say goodbye to either a chapter in our life or a group of people, or somebody that we loved,” he said.
Peter has convinced himself that isolation may be the only future available to him. “It’s easy to trick ourselves into thinking that we are destined to be alone, which is where Peter Parker’s head is at at the beginning of this movie,” Cretton explained.
However, Brand New Day will not leave Peter trapped in that emotional state. Cretton is interested in what happens when the hero is forced to evolve. “To be able to start him there and watch him evolve and grow and turn into something that I think we will all find both unexpected but surprisingly relatable, that to me was the gift of where the last movie left off.”
Four Years Without MJ and Ned
The story takes place four years after the events of No Way Home. During that time, MJ and Ned attended MIT, graduated, and returned to New York as young adults. Peter remained in the city, watching over his former friends from a distance while attempting to convince himself that he had let them go.
For the first time, Peter is operating without a support system. His identity as Spider-Man has consumed nearly every part of his life. Cretton previously described the movie’s central balance as the struggle between work, community, and personal connection.
He believes people are ultimately defined by those they love and those who love them. Peter may be protecting New York, but he is beginning to forget the person underneath the mask.
Which Spider-Man Villains Were Cut From Brand New Day?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day draws heavily from the character’s comic-book history. The movie’s opening montage takes inspiration from several classic Spider-Man covers and illustrations.
Instead of recreating those images exactly, the filmmakers translated their framing, composition, and emotional energy into live action. However, not every comic-inspired idea survived the final cut.
The Giant Villain Battle That Was Removed
When asked whether there were additional covers, panels, or obscure villains Cretton wanted to include, the filmmaker revealed that a major sequence had been removed. “Yeah, there were a lot,” Cretton said. “There was a whole other scene that ended up getting cut from the movie.”
The sequence would have brought several villains together for one enormous confrontation. “We were going to throw a whole bunch of villains into this one giant fight scene that ended up getting cut,” he explained.
Cretton did not reveal which characters were involved. However, the creative team went far enough to design several of them. “We were looking at a lot of the old classics,” he said. “It was really fun, though. We got to design a lot of them.”
The work may not be lost forever. “Maybe for another one, we’ll bring them back.”
The Villains Peter Parker Will Face
The completed movie already contains a deep collection of Spider-Man threats. Michael Mando returns as Mac Gargan and Scorpion after first appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming. His conflict with Spider-Man is fueled by unfinished business and personal resentment.
Marvin Jones III portrays Tombstone, while Boomerang and Tarantula also appear. The Hand brings an ancient and more mythic form of danger into Peter’s world.
A mysterious new enemy also hangs over the entire story. The figure can move its consciousness between different bodies and control people like characters in a video game. Peter senses the entity but cannot see it.
The villain also appears to recognize something familiar in Peter’s loneliness and confusion. Cretton had an enormous collection of characters and comic history available to him, but removing a battle involving multiple villains shows that spectacle was not allowed to overpower Peter’s emotional journey.
How Punisher and Savage Hulk Reflect Peter Parker’s Darkest Paths
More Than Exciting Spider-Man Pairings
The film delivers two long-awaited live-action pairings. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will encounter Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Savage Hulk.
Both meetings promise major action. However, Cretton explained that neither character was included only because it would be exciting to see them beside Spider-Man. “We didn’t put any of these characters into the movie just because we thought it’d be a cool pairing,” Cretton told Nerdtropolis.
Punisher and Hulk each represent something happening within Peter. “Both the Punisher and Bruce Banner and the Hulk reflect the theme of this movie and the journey that Peter Parker is on,” he said.
Punisher Is a Warning for Peter Parker
Frank Castle represents the person Peter could become if grief, anger, and responsibility completely consume him. “I think in many ways Peter Parker sees the Punisher as a potential warning sign of where he could go if he allowed himself to continue down the path that he’s on,” Cretton explained.
Frank responded to the murder of his family by turning his life into an endless war. Peter’s circumstances are different, but he is also replacing his personal identity with a mission.
The Punisher is a cautionary figure for Spider-Man. Should Peter continue disappearing into his work, he could become just as isolated and emotionally trapped as Frank. Cretton summarized Frank’s warning to Peter simply: “Don’t be like me.”
Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal’s Shared History
The dynamic also carries a personal history between Holland and Bernthal. The actors became friends before either officially joined the MCU. Bernthal helped Holland with his Spider-Man screen test, while Holland later returned the favor as Bernthal pursued the role of Punisher.
Their friendship influenced the characters’ on-screen relationship. What began as two heroes who strongly disliked one another developed into a more complicated sibling-like rivalry.
Savage Hulk Reflects Peter’s Loss of Control
Hulk provides a different reflection of Peter’s internal struggle. Peter undergoes an emotional and physical transformation in Brand New Day as his senses grow sharper, his connection to New York changes, and his genetic makeup may also be mutating.
Those changes lead him to Bruce Banner, who does not remember Peter but can still offer scientific guidance. The two characters initially connect through their shared scientific knowledge, but their meeting eventually results in the return of Savage Hulk.
This version moves away from the more controlled Smart Hulk seen in Avengers: Endgame. Banner once again becomes the towering and unpredictable force associated with earlier MCU appearances and the comics.
Cretton promised that the confrontation would deliver an enormous spectacle. “The scenes with Bruce and the Hulk, yes, they are going to be big and explosive and really exciting and one of the coolest action sequences of our movie,” he said.
Still, the sequence will not be defined by destruction alone. “I think you’ll also be surprised at the intimacy of it and the reflection that the Hulk has for the journey that Peter is on.”
Punisher shows Peter what could happen if he loses himself to his mission. Hulk reflects Peter’s fear of physically and emotionally losing control. Both characters deliver major cinematic pairings, but their true purpose is to challenge Peter Parker.
Why Sadie Sink Is Only One of Brand New Day’s Secrets
The Mystery Behind Sadie Sink’s Character
Sadie Sink’s character has become one of the movie’s most closely guarded mysteries. Fans have connected the Stranger Things star to numerous Marvel characters, while every trailer, image, and casting detail has inspired another round of theories.
Cretton understands that curiosity. However, he prefers entering a movie without already knowing every surprise. “I personally don’t like knowing everything about a movie before I watch it,” he told Nerdtropolis.
When asked whether Sink’s reveal would provide relief or create even more questions, Cretton warned that spoilers would likely spread quickly. “I hope everybody who is really curious, you should go watch it the first weekend, ’cause I imagine people are gonna start spilling the beans,” he said.
More Secrets Beyond Sadie Sink
Sink’s identity is also far from the only secret being protected. “There are a lot of things that we’re not telling people,” Cretton explained. “I think anybody who goes and sees this movie on opening weekend, you’re going to have a lot more than just Sadie Sink to talk about.”
The director views the intense speculation as part of the experience that comes with telling a Spider-Man story. “That to me is the fun of telling a story like this that has so much fan interaction, is how much people want to know even before they see the movie,” he said.
Cretton believes the finished story will reward audiences who avoid learning everything in advance. “I promise you it’s going to be very satisfying if you see it on opening weekend,” he said.
The director also recommended seeing it alongside the people viewers will want to speak with afterward. “Take all the friends that you want to discuss with, otherwise you’re going to have to hold your tongue until they see it.”
Cretton Reunites With Sadie Sink
Brand New Day reunites Cretton with Sink after their earlier collaboration on The Glass Castle who had no idea at the time, she would become such a prominent performer and a breakout star of Stranger Things.
Sink’s character is someone who balances strength and vulnerability. Several scenes also allow the actress to show a fiercer and more intense side of her performance.
Her character remains hidden. However, Cretton’s comments suggest audiences will leave the theater discussing far more than one casting reveal.
How Spider-Man’s Action Reveals Peter Parker’s Emotions
Action Must Serve Peter Parker’s Journey
Cretton created some of the MCU’s most memorable action sequences in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That movie’s fights combined martial arts, physical comedy, emotional conflict, and character development.
He brings the same philosophy to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. “I always think that action can play a really key role in the emotional journey of a character,” Cretton told Nerdtropolis.
That means a fight or explosion cannot exist only to create an impressive trailer moment. “I personally don’t really like action just for action’s sake,” he said. “I don’t think just explosions in themselves are interesting enough to hold my attention.”
Action becomes meaningful when it reflects what the character is experiencing. “When coupled with the emotional arc of a character, they can be very exhilarating,” Cretton explained.
Peng Zhang Returns for Brand New Day
Stunt coordinator Peng Zhang reunited with Cretton after their work on Shang-Chi. The director praised Zhang and his team for developing sequences that remain tied to Peter’s growth. “I am very proud of the work that we did in this movie,” Cretton said. “Peng Zhang and his incredible team put together some of the coolest action sequences that I’ve ever been a part of.”
Most importantly, the fights never lose sight of the hero at their center. “They are all very much woven around the journey of Peter Parker.”
Putting Audiences Inside Spider-Man’s Movement
The filmmakers also developed new ways to place audiences inside Spider-Man’s movement. Holland performed his own stunts whenever possible, with his background in gymnastics and dance helping him handle demanding movements with balance, timing, and body control.
For several point-of-view shots, Holland wore a specialized Cyclops helmet camera connected to a Rialto system. The equipment allowed him to operate the camera while performing as Spider-Man.
Director of photography Brett Pawlak also used the Sony Venice camera to move the lens extremely close to Holland’s face. The goal was to create the feeling that audiences were inside the mask with Peter.
The Sound and Physical Force of Web-Swinging
Sound became equally important. The rush of wind grows louder and more aggressive as Spider-Man gains speed, while web-swinging is not presented as effortless movement.
The sound emphasizes gravity, momentum, and the violent physical force pulling Peter through the city. The prop department even developed real web fluid that Holland could physically interact with during filming.
Each technical choice supports Cretton’s central idea. The action should never distract audiences from Peter Parker. It should reveal him.
How Brand New Day Transforms Peter Parker and Spider-Man
The physical changes Peter experiences are directly connected to his emotional condition. After years of isolation, his senses begin growing even stronger.
Sounds linger, threats feel closer, and New York begins to pulse around Peter like a living organism. His transformation symbolizes a deeper and more instinctive connection to the city he protects.
Peter’s emotional and physical changes develop alongside one another throughout the story which is compared to the life cycle of a spider.
Peter Parker’s Molting Process
Peter’s transformation accelerates after an encounter with MJ, which fills him with hope before leaving him emotionally devastated. He later wakes inside a cocoon of webs extending through his apartment.
This change known as a molting process represents the difficult transitions people experience while growing up.
The Meaning Behind Brand New Day
The movie’s title also reflects that process. Peter begins the story resisting change and clinging to a life that no longer exists. His journey requires accepting that he cannot return to the person he was before.
The emotional heart of the story is Peter growing up, stepping forward, and honoring his past by becoming something better. Cretton described the beauty of watching Peter accept that life changes and new chapters begin, even when saying goodbye remains painful.
Every morning still offers a brand-new day.
What Spider-Man and Naruto Have in Common
After guiding Peter Parker into a new era, Cretton will turn his attention to another beloved character. The filmmaker is set to explore the world of Naruto through a live-action adaptation.
Both properties come with enormous and passionate fan bases. However, Cretton’s connection to the characters reaches beyond their popularity.
“I feel very grateful that I get to go from exploring the world of a character like Peter Parker to exploring the character of Naruto,” he told Nerdtropolis.
The Connection Between Spider-Man and Naruto
At first, Spider-Man and Naruto may appear to have little in common. One is a Marvel superhero protecting New York City. The other is a young ninja fighting for recognition and dreaming of becoming the leader of his village.
Cretton sees the emotional connection between them. “There are a lot of similarities between the two characters,” he said. “They’re both characters who have had some very tragic pasts.”
Neither hero is perfect. Peter and Naruto make emotional decisions, misunderstand situations, struggle with loneliness, and repeatedly fall short of their goals. “They make a lot of mistakes, they’re very imperfect, but at their core, they’re characters who are desperately trying to be the best version of themselves,” Cretton explained.
That shared humanity is what continues to attract him to these worlds. “I feel very lucky to explore worlds like that.”
