Spider-Man: Brand New Day Will Take Peter Parker Back to Basics
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is bringing Peter Parker back to New York City, but the friendly neighborhood hero will enter his latest adventure without the friends, family, or support system that once kept him grounded.
During the film’s global press conference, director Destin Daniel Cretton who we personally interviewed was joined by Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Sadie Sink. Producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal also participated as the group finally began revealing more about the highly secretive Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures production.
While major spoilers remain locked away, the cast and filmmakers confirmed that Brand New Day will be a smaller and more personal story than Spider-Man: No Way Home. The sequel will explore Peter’s isolation, the return of a street-level New York setting, and his complicated encounters with the Punisher and Hulk.
It will also introduce a mysterious new character played by Sink, whose true identity remains one of the movie’s biggest secrets.
Peter Parker Begins His Darkest Chapter
Following the events of No Way Home, the entire world has forgotten Peter Parker. MJ and Ned no longer remember their former best friend, leaving Peter to begin a life in which Spider-Man is the only meaningful identity he has left.
Holland described Peter as being at the beginning of “the darkest chapter of his life.” The actor explained that Brand New Day serves as a cautionary story about the dangers of living without friends, community, or emotional support. Peter was previously warned by Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man that asking for help can sometimes be the bravest choice a person makes. However, Peter is actively ignoring that lesson.
“He is actively ignoring that advice,” Holland said. “And it is having a profound effect on his life as a human being.” The tragic twist is that Spider-Man is thriving while Peter Parker is falling apart. Holland said audiences will see one of the most truthful versions of what Spider-Man means to New York City. The hero may receive attention and praise in public, but Peter still returns home alone to a small and uncomfortable apartment.
That contrast between Peter’s public success and private loneliness will drive the film.
Pascal highlighted one scene that she believes captures the essence of the character. Peter sits on the floor beside a small washing machine while looking at a key to the city. His Spider-Man suit spins inside the machine as an award meant to make him feel important sits beside the reality of his lonely apartment.
For Pascal, the image represents the constant conflict between who Peter is, who he wants to become, and who the world expects Spider-Man to be.
A Smaller Story After No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together three generations of live-action Spider-Men while opening the Marvel Cinematic Universe to characters from previous Sony films.
Rather than trying to make the next movie even bigger, Pascal said the creative team decided to move in the opposite direction. “What we decided, especially because of the director that we had, was to make a movie that was smaller,” Pascal said. “That was about somebody’s personal life, and that was about Peter.”
Removing Peter from the memories of everyone he loves returned the character to one of Spider-Man’s most familiar struggles. Nobody knows who Peter Parker is, forcing him to balance the responsibilities of Spider-Man without receiving support from the people closest to him.
Cretton said the title Brand New Day represents the fresh start Peter secretly wants but has not yet learned how to accept. That idea will extend beyond Peter. Cretton teased that several characters will search for their own version of a new beginning over the course of the movie.
Holland praised Cretton for bringing the project together after its story had been moving in several different directions. “What we needed was someone to come in and focus us all on one idea,” Holland said.
According to Holland, that central idea became the experience of a young person living alone. Although the movie still contains large-scale action, its emotional foundation remains Peter’s isolation.
MJ and Ned Feel Something Is Missing
MJ and Ned may not remember Peter, but Brand New Day will explore the emotional impression he left behind. Batalon revealed that Ned and MJ have built full lives without Peter. Despite that, both characters sense that something is missing.
For Ned, that feeling appears to fuel the creation of the Spidey Tracker. He wants to understand why Spider-Man repeatedly appears around him and MJ, especially when they are in danger. Without knowing their history together, Ned begins questioning whether Spider-Man is following them or feels some unexplained connection to them.
Zendaya described filming scenes under the new circumstances as an interesting acting exercise. She and Batalon had to approach familiar relationships as though their characters had never met Peter.
However, Peter’s influence remains present. MJ and Ned are still friends and continue living in New York, suggesting that the relationships Peter helped create survived even after every memory of him disappeared.
Zendaya also revealed an important reversal between MJ and Peter. MJ was traditionally the pessimist, while Peter remained the hopeful member of the group. Without Peter in her life, MJ has unknowingly adopted some of his optimism. Peter, meanwhile, has taken on the negativity that once defined MJ. “There’s clearly something still there,” Zendaya said.
The Punisher Will Not Be Compromised
Brand New Day will finally bring Holland’s Spider-Man and Bernthal’s Punisher together on the big screen.
The crossover carries additional history because Bernthal helped Holland film audition tapes when the two actors worked together years before Holland officially became Spider-Man. Bernthal said seeing Holland lead the franchise nearly 10 years later made their reunion especially meaningful.
However, introducing Frank Castle into a Spider-Man movie presented a major tonal challenge.
Bernthal has portrayed the violent vigilante in mature television projects, while Holland’s Spider-Man movies have traditionally reached a broader audience. The actor acknowledged that he was protective of Frank and questioned whether the character could move between those different worlds without losing what makes him the Punisher.
The filmmakers did not ignore that concern. Instead, they made the contrast part of the story.
“I think what we set out to do is to make it believable that the Punisher could walk out of one of those TV-MA shows and onto this set, and vice versa,” Bernthal said. He believes the movie respects the tone created by Cretton while allowing Frank Castle to remain recognizable to longtime Punisher fans.
Holland said Spider-Man and the Punisher’s opposing views provide the perfect conflict for every scene they share.
Spider-Man continues trying to see the good in people. Frank has a far more unforgiving approach to criminals. Holland teased that the eventual resolution to their conflict is “fulfilling,” “satisfying,” and “scary.”
Despite their serious disagreements, Holland and Bernthal were also able to bring humor and improvisation into their scenes. Holland emphasized that the movie never compromises Frank or turns him into a softened version of the Punisher simply to fit Spider-Man’s world.
Hulk and Spider-Man Get Surprisingly Personal
Mark Ruffalo was not present at the press conference, but the cast and filmmakers shared additional details about his return as Bruce Banner and Hulk.
Cretton described the scenes between Holland and Ruffalo as “explosive,” “wonderful,” and “surprisingly intimate.”
Rather than treating Hulk as a separate visual effect added after filming, Cretton approached the sequences as performances between Holland and Ruffalo. The actors were able to improvise together and discover smaller character moments within the spectacle.
Holland recalled standing on an apple box while Ruffalo held an enormous Hulk hand around him. Ruffalo performed Hulk’s voice during the scene, forcing Holland to fully commit despite the strange reality of filming a motion-capture sequence. “I just have to trust the process,” Holland remembered thinking.
Feige called the pairing of Spider-Man and Hulk a major comic book moment he once never thought would be possible.
He also revealed that the movie’s action was influenced by the recent Spider-Man video games. According to Feige, those games raised expectations for what Spider-Man action could look like, and Cretton has “matched and surpassed” that level.
Sadie Sink’s Character Changed During Development
Sink remains unable to reveal the name of her character, but the press conference offered one of the most interesting clues about how she joined the film.
The actress did not initially receive the full screenplay. Instead, she had several conversations with Cretton that helped her understand the character and the direction of the story. Sink said she was already a major fan of Spider-Man, particularly Holland’s version, making the experience of joining the cast feel surreal.
Pascal revealed that Sink’s character shares the movie’s larger themes of isolation, alienation, and denial. Those struggles also connect Peter, MJ, Ned, Frank Castle, and Bruce Banner.
Feige then explained that the filmmakers were originally discussing several possible characters and villain-related storylines. The final decision was made after co-producer Emily Fong suggested that Sink could play one of the characters under consideration.
Once Sink’s name entered the conversation, the creative team quickly decided that she should play the role. Feige confirmed that Sink did not go through a traditional audition process. Her casting directly influenced which character became part of the story.
Holland later praised Sink’s performance and her ability to join a cast that had already worked together for nearly a decade. He described her character as a fresh and unique addition to the series and called Sink an “unsung hero” of the movie because she has been unable to discuss her work publicly.
“The emotion she brings, the professionalism, the heart, it’s exactly what this movie needed,” Holland said.
New York City Becomes a Major Character Again
Brand New Day will place a renewed focus on Spider-Man swinging through New York.
Feige said the previous MCU Spider-Man movies intentionally avoided spending too much time showing the hero swinging between Manhattan skyscrapers because earlier Spider-Man films had already explored those images extensively.
Nearly 10 years later, the filmmakers felt the experience could be exciting again.
To capture the city, production designer Charlie Wood and his team constructed four complete New York blocks at Pinewood Studios in London. Holland said the sets were so detailed that the cast could temporarily forget they were filming outside the United States.
The streets included moving vehicles, background performers, weathered surfaces and small pieces of city life. Holland said his younger brother Paddy worked in the art department and helped age the sets by adding discarded chewing gum and damaging newly painted traffic lines. “New York is as big a character in this movie as any of us,” Holland said.
Before production began, Cretton traveled through New York with Wood, cinematographer Brett Pawlak, and other department leaders. They photographed buildings, studied street textures, and examined the city’s architecture.
Cretton said the team also referenced Lucky Lou, an independent movie filmed in New York, while developing the grounded and authentic visual style of Brand New Day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, and Mark Ruffalo.
