Elio Review: Pixar Delivers a Wholesome Sci-Fi Tale Filled With Wonder

Pixar returns to space in the heartfelt cosmic adventure Elio.

Pixar’s Elio finally arrives in theaters June 20 after multiple delays pushed its release from 2024 into 2025. For longtime Pixar fans, the film marks a long-awaited return to space and offers a charming, heartfelt story that taps directly into childhood imagination and wonder.

The story follows Elio, a young space enthusiast with a vivid imagination and obsession with aliens. After being accidentally transported to the Communiverse—an intergalactic organization representing countless alien worlds—he’s mistaken for Earth’s leader. Tasked with representing humanity, Elio must navigate strange creatures, cosmic politics, and personal discovery as he searches for his true place in the universe.

Visually, Elio is packed with vibrant and imaginative alien worlds.

The unique designs are both playful and inventive, though some scenes feel visually less detailed compared to Pixar’s more dynamic entries. Still, the film succeeds in creating an immersive and colorful universe that feels accessible to audiences of all ages.

The voice cast shines throughout. Yonas Kibreab brings Elio to life with the perfect balance of innocence, humor, and curiosity. Remy Edgerly’s portrayal of Glordon is a standout, offering warmth and charm that becomes one of the film’s emotional anchors. Zoe Saldaña delivers a grounded, emotional performance as Elio’s Aunt Olga, while Brad Garrett surprises as the villainous Lord Grigon, delivering his recognizable voice with a menacing edge that fits the role perfectly. Additional voice work from Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson further enriches the film’s diverse alien ensemble.

Elio is directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina, with Mary Alice Drumm producing. Together, they deliver a story that captures Pixar’s signature blend of humor, heart, and self-discovery.

While the film offers plenty of wholesome moments and heartfelt themes, some viewers may wish for a more ambitious sci-fi adventure in the vein of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Despite that, Elio succeeds in delivering the emotional beats that Pixar is known for, making it a sweet addition to the studio’s growing lineup.

Verdict

I give Elio 4 out 5 stars it is wholesome, heartfelt, and filled with childhood magic. The Pixar film will resonate especially with younger audiences while offering plenty of charm for adults.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Elio opens in theaters June 20.
