From Animation to Reality: The Magic of Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon

Dean DeBlois brings Berk to life in live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

Dean DeBlois, the visionary director behind the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, returns to the world of Berk. This time, it is in a live-action reimagining of the beloved animated saga. Slated to hit theaters on June 13, this adaptation offers cutting-edge visual effects. It combines these effects with heartfelt storytelling. The aim is to reintroduce audiences to Hiccup, Toothless, and the rugged Viking isle.

DeBlois, a three-time Oscar nominee, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “It felt like an amazing opportunity to not only direct a live-action movie but to jump back into a world that I frankly miss.” He highlighted the universal appeal of Hiccup’s bond with Toothless, describing it as “wish-fulfilling” and central to the story’s themes of courage and individuality.

The cast includes Mason Thames (The Black Phone) as Hiccup and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid. Gerard Butler reprises his iconic role as Chief Stoick the Vast, transitioning seamlessly from animation to live action. “To watch him step right out of the animated movie and into this new version is such a treat,” DeBlois remarked.

With producers Marc Platt (La La Land) and Adam Siegel (Drive), the live-action adaptation has significant goals. It aims to honor the legacy of its animated predecessor, which grossed over $1.6 billion globally and earned four Academy Award nominations. Inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book series, the franchise is celebrated for its emotional depth and awe-inspiring visuals.

DeBlois emphasized the film’s timeless message.

“At its core, this is really a story about finding your voice and being brave enough to follow your own convictions in a world that wants you to become like everyone else.” Shot using IMAX technology, the film promises an immersive experience, blending breathtaking landscapes with epic dragon flights. The director hopes fans of the original films will appreciate this new vision, as it “comes from a place of love and respect.”

Audiences can revisit Berk. They can witness the transformation of this cherished saga. How to Train Your Dragon will soar into theaters in summer of 2025.
