Foundation will return with production set to begin in early 2026.
Apple TV+ has officially renewed its hit sci-fi series Foundation for a fourth season. The announcement comes just ahead of the highly anticipated season three finale, which premieres globally on Friday, September 12, 2025. Production on the new season is slated to begin in early 2026.
The series is based on Isaac Asimov’s award-winning stories. Foundation has become one of Apple’s signature global hits. Season three has been called “the gold standard for all science fiction programming,” celebrated week after week for its scale, ambition, and visuals.
Co-Showrunners Speak on Renewal
“There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four,” said Ian Goldberg and David Kob, who lead the series alongside fellow executive producers Bill Bost, Lee Pace, Michael Satrazemis, Robyn Asimov, and David S. Goyer. “We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.”
Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, added: “It’s been fantastic to watch Foundation become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world. A Visually Stunning Saga
Continuously described as “visually stunning,” “breathtaking,” and “a must-see TV event,” Foundation season three stars Emmy-nominated actors Jared Harris, Lee Pace, and Lou Llobell. The latest season also expanded the ensemble with Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Bell, Synnøve Karlsen, Cody Fern, Tómas Lemarquis, Alexander Siddig, Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur, and Pilou Asbæk. Returning cast includes Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton, Terrence Mann, and Rowena King.
Season Three Recap
Season three of Foundation chronicles the rise of the titular Foundation beyond its humble beginnings, while the Empire of the Cleonic Dynasty begins to fracture. Both powers form an uneasy alliance as a new galactic threat emerges: a warlord known as “The Mule,” who seeks to dominate the universe through sheer military might and terrifying mind control.
In the season finale, “The Darkness,” Gaal Dornick and the Second Foundation mount a daring confrontation with the Mule, while the Emperor’s legacy suffers a devastating blow.
Looking Ahead
With season four now officially in the works, Apple TV+ is ensuring that Asimov’s sprawling saga continues to expand on-screen. Production is set to commence in early 2026, bringing fans back into one of television’s most ambitious science fiction universes.
