Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – Movie Review

Ghostbusters: Frozen is Ectoplasmic Perfection

In a world where nostalgia often feels like a double-edged sword, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire proves that sometimes revisiting the past can be an ectoplasmic perfection. Directed by Gil Kenan and penned by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, this latest installment in the beloved Ghostbusters franchise delivers a thrilling reunion of the original cast, a new generation of talent, and enough ghostly antics to satisfy even the most die-hard fans.

Set a couple of years after the emotionally charged events of Afterlife, Frozen Empire brings us back to the bustling streets of New York City, where the Spengler family, now joined by Gary Grooberson, the “Step Teacher,” portrayed with charm by Paul Rudd, find themselves facing a chilling new threat. McKenna Grace shines as the young Phoebe Spengler, carrying on the legacy of her grandfather, Egon. At the same time, Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon deliver solid performances as her family members.

One of the highlights of Frozen Empire is the reunion of the original Ghostbusters team.

Returning once again are Dan Aykroyd, Billy Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts. Despite having less screen time than some may have hoped for this time around, it is a nostalgic treat that will give fans chills. Additionally, the return of iconic characters like Slimer and William Atherthon’s presence further solidifies the connection to the franchise’s roots. But it’s not just about looking back; Frozen Empire introduces us to a new villain and ghostly entities that add fresh excitement to the mix. Kumail Nanjiani’s inclusion injects humor into the proceedings, reminding audiences of his comedic prowess. Patton Oswalt also joins the fun, adding another layer of enjoyment to the ensemble.

Director Gil Kenan masterfully balances the film’s elements, seamlessly blending comedy, action, sci-fi, and horror. From the familiar sights of the New York City firehouse to the thrilling chases in the Ecto-1, every moment feels like a love letter to fans of the original films. While Frozen Empire delivers on the spectacle, some may find themselves longing for the emotional depth of Afterlife. The film excels in its grandeur but lacks the poignant moments that made its predecessor truly special.

With its top-notch performances, thrilling action sequences, and nods to the past, Frozen Empire proves that the Ghostbusters franchise still has plenty of life left in it.

Verdict

I give Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 4 out of 5 stars. It is a seamless blend of nostalgia and new thrills. It’s bigger and bolder, but one can’t help but yearn for a touch of the emotional resonance that Afterlife so beautifully captured. Nonetheless, Frozen Empire is a must-watch for fans old and new alike.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
