The Ghostbusters—played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson—find themselves in a struggle to keep their business afloat. But their fortunes change dramatically when a massive river of ectoplasm is discovered beneath the city, indicating a resurgence of ghostly phenomena. The plot thickens as the team uncovers a connection between the ectoplasm and a malevolent spirit named Vigo the Carpathian. He is a 16th-century tyrant whose spirit is attempting to return to the physical world.

The film reunites the original cast, including Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett and Rick Moranis as Louis Tully. Annie Potts also reprises her role as Janine Melnitz, the Ghostbusters’ quirky receptionist. Newcomers to the franchise include Peter MacNicol, who plays Dr. Janosz Poha, an art restorer under Vigo’s thrall. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd also penned the screenplay for “Ghostbusters II.” Their writing weaves together comedy and supernatural thrills, maintaining the charm that made the original film a cultural phenomenon.

Received mixed reviews from critics, but it was a resounding success with audiences.

It grossed an impressive $215.4 million at the box office, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year.
