Godzilla is a film that revived a franchise and created a universe.

Today, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2014 Godzilla film. This reboot of Toho’s legendary Godzilla franchise, directed by Gareth Edwards, reignited interest in the iconic monster and launched the incredibly successful MonsterVerse franchise. It was a milestone, marking the 30th film in the series. It grossed over $529 million worldwide, setting the stage for a new era of giant monster cinema.
“Godzilla” stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Lieutenant Ford Brody. It also stars Elizabeth Olsen as his wife, Elle, and Bryan Cranston as Ford’s father, Joe Brody. The ensemble cast includes Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, a scientist dedicated to understanding the colossal creature, and Sally Hawkins as Dr. Vivienne Graham, Serizawa’s colleague. The film’s plot centers on the reawakening of Godzilla, a prehistoric alpha predator, after decades of dormancy. The story begins with Joe Brody’s investigation into mysterious seismic activity that leads to discovering the MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms), ancient creatures that feed on radiation. When the MUTOs threaten global destruction, Godzilla emerges from the ocean’s depths to restore balance to nature, culminating in a spectacular showdown in San Francisco.
Gareth Edwards’ direction in the 2014 Godzilla film is noted for its unique approach, emphasizing a grounded and human perspective. This was a departure from previous iterations. The film focuses on the awe and terror inspired by the massive creatures rather than solely on their destructive power. The film’s visual effects and sound design were widely praised, effectively conveying the scale and power of Godzilla and his adversaries, further setting it apart from other monster films.
The resounding success paved the way for the MonsterVerse.
This shared cinematic universe brought some of cinema’s most renowned monsters to life. In 2017, ‘Kong: Skull Island’ expanded the universe with a fresh take on King Kong, followed by 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters,’ which introduced other legendary creatures like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. The franchise soared to new heights with 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ a highly anticipated film that witnessed the epic clash of the two titans.
The MonsterVerse is a living, breathing entity, constantly evolving and captivating us with its thrilling narratives. The last several months, we were treated to ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,’ and the ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ series. They delved deeper into the enigmatic organization that studies these colossal creatures. As we reflect on a decade since its release, the 2014 ‘Godzilla’ stands tall as a monumental film that paid homage to its legacy and set the stage for an exhilarating and expansive new chapter in monster cinema.
