Takashi Yamazaki returns to write and direct a follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.

At this year’s Godzilla Fest in Tokyo, Toho Co., Ltd. officially announced the next installment in its legendary kaiju franchise: Godzilla -0.0 (Godzilla Minus Zero). The upcoming film will once again be written, directed, and feature visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. He is the visionary filmmaker behind the globally acclaimed Godzilla Minus One.
The production will be handled by Toho Studios and ROBOT, with visual effects by Shirogumi. This creative lineup mirrors the same team responsible for revitalizing Godzilla’s cinematic legacy in 2023. Fans can expect another visually striking and emotionally charged chapter.
Following the Success of Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla Minus One became one of the biggest critical and commercial triumphs in Toho’s history. The 2023 release captured audiences worldwide with its post–World War II setting. It grounded human drama, and offered breathtaking special effects — all achieved on a fraction of a typical Hollywood budget.
The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. It made history as both Japan’s first-ever Oscar winner in that category and the first Godzilla film to take home an Academy Award. It also dominated the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize, winning eight awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
Director Takashi Yamazaki was widely praised for delivering a deeply emotional yet thrilling monster film that balanced national trauma, human resilience, and cinematic spectacle. For many fans, it was the most powerful and grounded depiction of Godzilla since the original 1954 classic.

Enter Godzilla -0.0
While story details are still under wraps, the new title suggests a continuation or evolution of the “Minus” storyline — possibly diving even deeper into the symbolic themes of destruction, rebirth, and humanity’s reckoning with nature. Some interpret the shift from “Minus One” to “Minus Zero” as a thematic reset or a fresh starting point in this modern era of Godzilla storytelling.
Yamazaki’s return at the helm reinforces Toho’s confidence in his creative vision and the growing appeal of his grounded take on kaiju cinema. With the same production houses and VFX studio returning, expectations are high that Godzilla -0.0 will push the boundaries even further in scale, emotion, and cinematic innovation.
Toho has not yet confirmed a release date or cast, but production is expected to begin soon. Given the massive global success of Minus One, fans around the world are already anticipating what could become another landmark entry in the franchise’s storied history.
