Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to Hit Theaters and Netflix This Fall

Guillermo del Toro brings Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein to life.

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is set to arrive in select theaters on October 17, before streaming on Netflix on November 7. Directed and written by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Frankenstein brings Shelley’s 1818 gothic masterpiece back to life with a new vision.

The film follows Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant yet egotistical scientist, as he creates a living being in his laboratory. What begins as an extraordinary scientific achievement quickly unravels into tragedy as the experiment destroys both creator and creation.

The film also stars Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. Del Toro produced the project alongside J. Miles Dale and Scott Stuber.

A Journey Decades in the Making

The first teaser trailer debuted during Netflix Tudum 2025. “Some of what I will tell you is fact. Some is not. But it is all true,” Isaac declares in the opening narration, according to Tudum by Netflix. For del Toro, the adaptation represents the realization of a lifelong dream. “This has been, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,” he told the audience at Tudum. “I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw [1931 star] Boris Karloff in, what became for me, an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system,” del Toro said, as reported by Tudum by Netflix.

Del Toro explained that the themes of creation, humanity, and monstrosity have long influenced his work, from Hellboy to his Oscar-winning Pinocchio. “Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son has consumed my stories again and again,” he said. “I wanted to make this film before even I had a camera, and I’ve been actively pursuing it now for 25 years,” according to Tudum by Netflix.

Cast Reactions

Isaac described playing Victor Frankenstein as “the experience of a lifetime,” calling the film “a dark and sumptuous emotional drama — a character piece sprung from the pages of Mary Shelley’s classic novel,” Tudum by Netflix reported.

Mia Goth said she “couldn’t wait to dive in” when she learned del Toro was adapting Shelley’s story. “I love material like this, and it all started with the book,” she said.

Elordi praised del Toro’s artistry, calling him “a real-life genius” and expressing pride in the work the cast and crew accomplished, according to Tudum by Netflix.

Visual Homages

The teaser also highlights del Toro’s signature imagery, from Victor holding a candelabra on a decaying staircase, reminiscent of Crimson Peak, to the appearance of a blood-red, angelic figure reminiscent of his designs in Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Pan’s Labyrinth, according to Tudum by Netflix.

Theatrical Release

Frankenstein will open in select theaters on October 17 before streaming globally on Netflix starting November 7.
