HBO Max Releases First Teaser for DC Studios Series Lanterns

Lanterns teaser reveals dark earthbound mystery in upcoming DC series.

HBO Max has released the first official teaser for Lanterns, the upcoming DC Studios television series starring Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Kelly Macdonald. The new drama, produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, is scheduled to debut later this August on HBO and will stream on HBO Max.

The teaser offers the first glimpse of the show’s grounded tone and central mystery. Rather than leaning into large-scale cosmic spectacle, the series appears to center on a dark investigation unfolding in the American heartland.

A Murder Mystery Anchors the Story

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler. The pair serve as intergalactic law enforcement officers who are drawn into a mysterious murder case on Earth.

According to the official logline, the investigation forces the two heroes to confront a dangerous and complex mystery that could have far-reaching consequences.

While Green Lantern stories often explore distant planets and cosmic threats, the series appears to adopt a more grounded approach. The teaser suggests a tone closer to a crime drama, with the Lanterns operating as investigators working through clues and secrets tied to the heartland.

Kelly Macdonald also stars in the series in a key role connected to the unfolding mystery.

A Creative Team With Major Television Pedigree

The pilot episode of Lanterns is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. The trio also serves as co-creators of the series, bringing together an impressive blend of television and comic book storytelling experience.

Mundy serves as the showrunner, guiding the overall direction of the project.

James Hawes directs the first two episodes. Additional directors attached to the series include Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.

The production is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios, marking one of the major television projects within the studio’s new era of interconnected DC storytelling.

The Legacy of the Green Lantern Corps

The series draws from one of DC Comics’ most expansive mythologies: the Green Lantern Corps. In the comics, the Corps is an intergalactic peacekeeping force made up of thousands of members from different planets across the universe.

Each Lantern wields a power ring fueled by willpower. The rings can create energy constructs, generate force fields, and allow the wearer to travel through space.

Among the many Green Lanterns in DC history, Hal Jordan and John Stewart remain two of the most iconic.

Hal Jordan debuted in 1959 and is often portrayed as a fearless test pilot who becomes one of the Corps’ greatest members. Meanwhile, John Stewart emerged in the early 1970s and became one of DC’s most influential heroes. Known for his discipline and strategic mind, Stewart has served as a soldier, architect, and leader within the Corps.

Over the decades, the Green Lantern mythology has expanded to include multiple Lantern Corps tied to different emotional spectrums. However, Lanterns appears focused primarily on the human side of the story, using the characters’ partnership to anchor the narrative.

DC Studios Expands Its Television Universe

Lanterns is one of several new projects emerging from DC Studios as the company builds a unified storytelling strategy across film and television featuring Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2, Superman, and the upcoming Supergirl and Clayface.

While previous Green Lantern adaptations have leaned heavily into cosmic spectacle, the new series appears to emphasize character-driven storytelling and a grounded investigative tone.

The teaser hints that the show will explore both the mythic scale of the Green Lantern universe and the human drama surrounding its heroes.

With an experienced creative team and two of DC’s most important Lanterns at the center, Lanterns could offer a fresh take on the legendary comic book property when it premieres later this summer.
