Hook Celebrates Its 35th Anniversary With New 4K Steelbook

The Steven Spielberg classic starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman returns in a limited-edition 4K release featuring an all-new hour-long behind-the-scenes documentary.

Steven Spielberg’s beloved family adventure Hook is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a new limited-edition 4K Ultra HD Steelbook packed with never-before-seen material from the making of the 1991 film.

The new release brings Hook to 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision, restored from the original camera negative. It will also include Dolby Atmos audio alongside English 5.1 and 2-channel surround options.

However, the biggest addition for longtime fans is an all-new hour-long documentary that opens the archives on Spielberg’s ambitious journey to Neverland.

Hook Never, Never Ending Goes Behind The Scenes

The new documentary, titled Hook Never, Never Ending, will be presented entirely in 4K resolution and features previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage captured during the production of Hook.

The documentary provides extensive access to Spielberg and the film’s cast and crew, including Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts.

Archival interviews and production footage will be joined by Spielberg’s own home movies, offering a rare look at both the creative highs and challenges of making the large-scale fantasy adventure.

The documentary serves as a time capsule of the production while revisiting a movie that has developed an increasingly passionate following in the decades since its theatrical debut.

The Steelbook also includes another newly assembled archival feature titled Bangarang! More From the Hook Archives. Presented in 4K, the bonus feature offers additional behind-the-scenes footage from the production.

Fans will also find 11 deleted scenes and the original theatrical trailer among the release’s special features.

Robin Williams Takes Peter Pan Back To Neverland

Released in 1991, Hook offered Spielberg’s unique continuation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan mythology.

Robin Williams stars as Peter Banning, a successful middle-aged lawyer who has completely forgotten that he was once Peter Pan.

Peter has traded Neverland for adulthood, becoming consumed by his career while struggling to connect with his children, Jack and Maggie. His forgotten past suddenly returns when Captain Hook kidnaps the children and takes them to Neverland.

Maggie Smith stars as Granny Wendy Darling, who reveals Peter’s true identity and sets him on a journey back to the world he left behind.

Once Peter returns to Neverland, he must rediscover his imagination, reconnect with the Lost Boys and remember how to become Peter Pan before he can challenge Captain Hook and rescue his children.

Dustin Hoffman stars as the flamboyant and dangerous Hook, while Bob Hoskins plays his loyal pirate companion Smee. Julia Roberts appears as Tinker Bell, who helps Peter reconnect with the person he once was.

The story mixes fantasy, comedy and adventure with themes of childhood, family, friendship and the importance of holding onto imagination.

Hook Earned Five Academy Award Nominations

While Hook has become a major nostalgic favorite among audiences, the film also received significant recognition following its original theatrical release.

The movie earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Best Original Song for “When You’re Alone.”

Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Jim V. Hart and Malia Scotch Marmo, based on a screen story by Hart and Nick Castle.

Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Gerald R. Molen produced the movie, with the story drawing from the original stage play and books written by J.M. Barrie.

More than three decades later, Hook continues to stand out as one of the most visually imaginative films of Spielberg’s career and one of Williams’ most memorable family performances.

The newly uncovered production footage gives audiences an opportunity to revisit the movie from an entirely different perspective, including seeing Spielberg and his cast creating Neverland before many of its sets, characters and moments became instantly recognizable pieces of movie history.
