Helen Mirren Becomes Patricia Highsmith in A Talent for Murder

Anton Corbijn directs Helen Mirren, Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke in Bleecker Street’s new psychological thriller.

Oscar winner Helen Mirren is stepping into the mind of one of literature’s most celebrated crime writers in A Talent for Murder, a new psychological thriller from director Anton Corbijn.

Mirren portrays author Patricia Highsmith, the writer behind the Tom Ripley novels that began with The Talented Mr. Ripley. Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke also star.

Rather than serving as a traditional Highsmith biopic, A Talent for Murder uses the author as the centerpiece of a fictional mystery involving obsession, manipulation, and murder. The movie is written by Joanna Murray-Smith.

A Talent for Murder Puts Patricia Highsmith Inside a Thriller

A Talent for Murder follows a mysterious young man from a New York publishing company who travels to Switzerland. His assignment is to convince the reclusive Highsmith to write one final installment in her celebrated Ripley series.

Alden Ehrenreich plays the young man who enters Highsmith’s isolated world. What begins as a professional mission develops into a psychological battle as the two circle ideas of crime, storytelling, and murder.

Olivia Cooke rounds out the film’s central cast.

The premise gives the film an especially fitting connection to Highsmith’s legacy. Her Tom Ripley character first appeared in the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley and ultimately became the centerpiece of five novels. Highsmith’s work has inspired numerous screen adaptations, including Strangers on a Train, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Carol and the Netflix series Ripley

Helen Mirren Adds Patricia Highsmith to Her Legendary Career

Playing Highsmith gives Mirren another complicated real-life figure to tackle in a career filled with acclaimed transformations.

One of Mirren’s defining performances came in 2006’s The Queen, where she portrayed Queen Elizabeth II. The performance earned Mirren the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Her acclaimed film career also includes The Madness of King George, Gosford Park and The Last Station, all of which earned her Academy Award nominations. Other major credits include Excalibur, Calendar Girls, Hitchcock, Woman in Gold, Eye in the Sky and The Good Liar.

Mirren has also become a familiar presence in major franchises. She played retired assassin Victoria Winslow opposite Bruce Willis in RED and RED 2 before joining the Fast & Furious franchise as Magdalene “Queenie” Shaw. More recently, she appeared as Hespera in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, portrayed Golda Meir in Golda and served as the narrator of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Television audiences also know Mirren for her acclaimed run as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. Her decades of work across film, television and theater have made her one of the most decorated performers of her generation.

That history of playing commanding and complicated figures makes Highsmith another intriguing addition to Mirren’s filmography.

Anton Corbijn Returns to Psychological Thriller Territory

A Talent for Murder is directed by Anton Corbijn, whose previous feature films include Control, The American with George Clooney and A Most Wanted Man with Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Bleecker Street will release A Talent for Murder in theaters nationwide on Friday, October 23, 2026.
