Dean DeBlois pulls off the impossible with 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon.

From the very start, it’s clear that How to Train Your Dragon’s live-action adaptation is something truly special. Writer-director Dean DeBlois, who launched and led the original animated trilogy to worldwide acclaim, has crafted a bold, beautiful new version that hits all the right notes—epic, emotional, and completely breathtaking. Live-action adaptations are notoriously tricky, but somehow, DeBlois defies the odds and delivers pure movie magic once again.
As someone who never watched the animated trilogy all the way through but has seen enough to appreciate what it means to fans, even I could feel the weight of how monumental this movie is. It’s the kind of adaptation that respects its roots while expanding the legend in bold new ways—right up there with the recent Lilo & Stitch reveal as one of the most impressive live-action remakes to date.
Mason Thames Becomes Hiccup
Let me just say—I’ve had the honor of hosting a con panel with Mason Thames (alongside Walker Scobell), and I’ve been rooting for his career from the start. He’s a true talent and an even better human. So, to see him take on a role as iconic as Hiccup and nail it? That hit me hard.

Mason, a longtime fan of the original How to Train Your Dragon movies, was able to imitate Jay Baruchel’s beloved voice performance, but decided not to, which was a great choice. He brought his own energy and emotion while still paying respectful homage. You believe every moment of his journey, from misunderstood inventor to dragon-riding legend. He is Hiccup, and I couldn’t be more proud to watch him shine.
Nico Parker and Gerard Butler Light Up the Screen
Nico Parker, already impressive in The Last of Us, brings fierce charm and depth to Astrid. Her chemistry with Mason’s Hiccup grows beautifully across the film, and it’s her layered performance that helps ground the more fantastical elements.

And then there’s Gerard Butler, back as Stoick the Vast—this time in live-action. His return gave me chills. These fatherly, commanding roles are where Butler absolutely thrives. It’s raw, powerful stuff, and seeing him bring Stoick to life with even more gravitas was a major highlight.
Toothless in Live Action? Absolute Perfection.
Let’s talk about Toothless. With its reported $150–200 million budget, the CGI in this film is absolutely top-tier. Toothless looks stunning—his expressions, movement, and relationship with Hiccup are beautifully animated and lifelike. It’s one of the best uses of VFX I’ve seen in years. And when those dragons take flight across the sky? You feel like you’re right there with them.

A Supporting Cast That Soars
How to Train Your Dragon’s supporting players also deserve praise. There’s no weak link from Nick Frost’s Gobber to standout moments from Julian Dennison, Ruth Codd, and Peter Serafinowicz. The movie knows when to inject humor and when to lean into heart, and that’s a delicate balance that’s tough to pull off.

What really surprised me was how fast the action kicked in. The movie grabs you early with a strong opening, then wisely takes its time to build the bond between Hiccup and Toothless. Astrid’s gradual shift toward seeing Hiccup in a new light felt earned and heartfelt. It’s a perfect blend of action, emotion, and growth.
A Worthy How to Train Your Dragon Legacy
Dean DeBlois knows this world better than anyone. He wrote, produced, and directed this adaptation, and it shows in every frame. He’s taken the magic of Cressida Cowell’s books and his own DreamWorks trilogy and elevated it to new heights with this IMAX-worthy spectacle.
Fans of the original series—who helped it earn over $1.6 billion at the global box office—will not be disappointed. This is the ultimate tribute to Hiccup and Toothless, a story that honors the past while breathing new life into the franchise.
How to Train Your Dragon Verdict
I give How to Train Your Dragon 5 out of 5 stars. It is a triumph. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering this story for the first time, you’ll be swept away by its heart, visual splendor, and powerful performances. Dean DeBlois has delivered something rare—a live-action adaptation that stands tall on its own while respecting every beat of the beloved original.
This one soars.
