The latest INSIDIOUS movie introduces a new heroine, expands the mythology of The Further and delivers some seriously stomach-turning scares.

At this point, I have to admit that the INSIDIOUS franchise has become a bit of a blur for me. I remember renting the original INSIDIOUS and really digging it. I have never considered myself a horror connoisseur, but there was something about that first movie that immediately grabbed me. More than anything, it was The Further.
That eerie purgatorial world was such a creative way to visualize the supernatural. It gave INSIDIOUS an identity beyond simply being another haunted house movie. Even after all these years, The Further remains the franchise’s greatest weapon.
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER understands that. Director Jacob Chase brings audiences back into that nightmare with a new family and a story that pushes the supernatural realm in an interesting new direction. Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up. Gemma discovers she can travel into The Further, but there is a dangerous twist: she can also bring whatever is lurking there back into the real world.
That simple addition gives the franchise another way to play with the rules we already know.
The Further Is Still INSIDIOUS’ Greatest Creation
I may not remember every demon, twist, or connection across this franchise, but I remember The Further. That says a lot about how well thought out the concept was from the beginning.

The original INSIDIOUS, directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, arrived in 2010 and introduced audiences to the Lambert family, astral projection, and the terrifying dimension known as The Further. The franchise eventually expanded through sequels and prequels, with Elise Rainier becoming one of its most recognizable characters.
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER shifts the spotlight to Gemma while retaining the mythology that has held these movies together. The official production notes describe The Further as a “purgatorial realm of lost souls,” and this movie expands its capabilities by letting its supernatural inhabitants cross back with Gemma.
Visually, that remains the part of INSIDIOUS that captures me the most.
There is something wonderfully cinematic about entering this dark, distorted space where anything could be hiding just outside your field of vision. Chase finds entertaining ways to bring it back to life on the big screen without completely abandoning what made it memorable in the first place.
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER Turned My Stomach Upside Down
This movie got me good. INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER had my stomach turned upside down between its jump scares, bloody imagery, and some genuinely nasty moments.

And then there are the dentist scenes. Nope.
Just thinking about them has me shivering again. Some horror sequences attack very specific fears, and anything involving dental work already has an unfair advantage. OUT OF THE FURTHER knows exactly how uncomfortable those moments are and takes full advantage of them.
The film carries a PG-13 rating for strong violent content, bloody images, terror, and strong language, and it certainly pushes into some gruesome territory within those boundaries.
It is one of those movies where I found myself physically reacting to what was happening. I kept telling myself that I need to stay away from this franchise, yet somehow INSIDIOUS keeps pulling me right back into The Further.
After watching this one, I can confirm my heart just can’t take this anymore.
Amelia Eve Gives The Franchise A New Heroine
One of the smartest decisions is giving this chapter its own heroine instead of simply trying to recreate what came before.

Amelia Eve brings a strong presence to Gemma and gives audiences someone new to follow through this increasingly strange mythology. Her abilities also allow the filmmakers to explore The Further differently, instead of relying entirely on the same tricks.
The franchise needs that evolution. After multiple movies, there is only so much you can do with characters simply entering The Further. The idea that Gemma can bring its inhabitants into our world makes the barrier between these two places far more dangerous.
Brandon Perea also joins Eve in the new cast, while Jacob Chase directs from his own screenplay based on a story by Chase and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan and Leigh Whannell serve as producers.
But one returning face immediately reminds you exactly what franchise you are watching.
Lin Shaye Remains The Nick Fury Of The INSIDIOUS Universe
Then Lin Shaye shows up as Elise Rainier. The audience I watched the movie with gave her a big applause, and it was completely deserved.

At this point, Elise feels like the Nick Fury of the INSIDIOUS universe. She is the connective tissue who can show up, immediately establish credibility, and make everything feel connected to the larger mythology.
Shaye has become synonymous with INSIDIOUS, and seeing her again provides an important bridge between this new chapter and everything that came before it. The official production notes appropriately describe Elise as her “iconic role,” and that description has absolutely been earned.
There is also something comforting about seeing her in a movie designed to make you feel anything but comfortable.
I Wanted INSIDIOUS Cranked To 11
For everything I enjoyed, INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER also left me wanting more. The movie drags in places, and that becomes more noticeable because I kept waiting for it to completely unleash itself.

I wanted more jump scares and wanted more relentless terror. The new cast works, but a few more recognizable names could have also helped give this chapter a larger sense of scale. When you return to a horror franchise that’s already been around this long, I want the latest installment to feel like an event rather than simply another trip into familiar territory.
There are stretches where OUT OF THE FURTHER threatens to become that bigger, nastier INSIDIOUS movie before pulling itself back. That is frustrating because its best sequences show just how much life is still left in this concept.
Verdict
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER is probably the closest this franchise has come to recapturing what I enjoyed about the original movie.
It expands The Further without losing what made that world so visually fascinating in the first place. Amelia Eve gives the series a compelling new heroine, Lin Shaye remains its connective tissue, and several sequences left me squirming in my seat.
I just wish the entire movie operated at that same intensity.
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER is now playing in theaters.
