Sony Pictures Fall Preview: Spider-Man Crosses $2 Billion As Insidious Wraps Up Summer

Sony Pictures heads into fall with major box office momentum.

Sony Pictures is heading into the fall movie season with major momentum after a blockbuster summer led by SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY.

The latest Spider-Man adventure has now crossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, giving Sony one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the year. Before the studio turns the page to fall, INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER will wrap up its summer slate when it hits theaters this weekend.

From there, Sony’s fall lineup gets underway with Zach Cregger’s RESIDENT EVIL on September 18, followed by Aaron Sorkin’s THE SOCIAL RECKONING on October 9, Taika Waititi’s KLARA AND THE SUN on October 23 and GHOST SOLDIER, previously titled ARCHANGEL, on November 6.

Here is a look at what Sony Pictures has coming to theaters as summer ends and fall begins.

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER — August 21

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER arrives in theaters this weekend, helping Sony close out its summer movie season with the return of one of its biggest modern horror franchises.

The INSIDIOUS series has earned more than $740 million at the global box office, and the latest installment introduces a new family while expanding what The Further is capable of.

Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up. Gemma discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the center of the INSIDIOUS universe.

Her ability comes with a terrifying twist. Gemma doesn’t just have the power to enter The Further. She can bring what lives there back into the real world. Once its demons discover what she can do, our world becomes their playground.

Lin Shaye reprises her iconic role as Elise Rainier, while Brandon Perea also stars. Jacob Chase directs and wrote the screenplay from a story by Chase and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan and Leigh Whannell produce.

Following the enormous box-office run of SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER gives Sony one final major theatrical release to wrap up its summer.

RESIDENT EVIL — September 18

Sony’s fall lineup begins with the return of RESIDENT EVIL, this time under the direction of WEAPONS and BARBARIAN filmmaker Zach Cregger.

The movie is described as a thrilling and terrifying reinvention of the RESIDENT EVIL franchise with an entirely new story.

Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself caught in an action-packed, nonstop race for survival as one horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

Cregger directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.

After making his mark on modern horror with BARBARIAN and WEAPONS, Cregger getting the opportunity to reinvent one of gaming’s biggest survival-horror properties makes RESIDENT EVIL one of Sony’s most anticipated fall releases.

THE SOCIAL RECKONING — October 9

Aaron Sorkin returns to the world of Facebook with THE SOCIAL RECKONING, a companion piece to THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

Sorkin’s original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to The Wall Street Journal’s Facebook Files exposé.

Mikey Madison stars as Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer who enlists Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, to help expose some of the social network’s most closely guarded secrets. Their efforts send them on a dangerous journey that ultimately leads to blowing the whistle on the company.

Sorkin writes and directs the dramatic thriller. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong.

KLARA AND THE SUN — October 23

Jenna Ortega leads KLARA AND THE SUN, an adaptation of the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro.

Academy Award winner Taika Waititi directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Dahvi Waller.

Ortega stars as Klara, an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. Her search leads her to Josie, played by Mia Tharia, and the two immediately recognize a kindred spirit in each other.

Josie has a complicated relationship with her mother, played by Amy Adams, and the family has suffered a great loss. Klara’s innocent sense of wonder and unwavering loyalty begin helping the family heal and bring light back into Josie’s complicated world.

The cast brings together Ortega, Adams and Tharia alongside Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne.

GHOST SOLDIER — November 6

Previously titled ARCHANGEL, the newly renamed GHOST SOLDIER brings Jim Caviezel back to the action-thriller genre under the direction of William Eubank.

Caviezel stars as Henry “Fitz” Fitzgerald, a solitary man with a mysterious past who lives quietly off the grid in his hometown. His peaceful existence is threatened when a powerful foreign corporation arrives in the community determined to seize his and his neighbors’ land for a massive payday.

The corporation quickly discovers that Fitz is far more dangerous than he appears.

Fitz is a former Special Forces soldier and advanced weapons developer. Armed with weapons his enemies have never seen, a lifetime of lethal military training and an unwavering code of justice, he becomes the one thing his enemies never anticipated: a one-man war they can’t win.

Eubank directs from a screenplay by Chris Papasadero. David Zelon and William Sherak produce, while Caviezel, Joseph Micucci, Paul Neinstein and James Vanderbilt serve as executive producers.

The cast also includes Olivia Thirlby, Beau Knapp, Garret Dillahunt and Shea Whigham.

Sony Looks Ahead

The summer box office has set a high bar for Sony Pictures. Now, with four very different films arriving over the next few months, the studio has an opportunity to finish 2026 just as strongly as it started.

For moviegoers, the fall season is just getting started.
