It’s hard to believe that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was released a year ago today! This vibrant and action-packed animated film brought the beloved Turtles back to the big screen in a way that resonated with both die-hard fans and a new generation. Crowned as Nerdtropolis’ Animated Movie of 2023, this film was a breath of fresh air in the animated movie scene and remains a fan favorite. Jeff Rowe directed the film. He previously co-wrote the Nerdtropolis Animated Film of the Year: The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021) with Mike Rianda.

The plot of Mutant Mayhem reimagined the origins of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, blending the familiar with fresh twists. This time, the Turtles—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael—were portrayed as teenagers navigating adolescence’s complexities while defending New York City from a new breed of mutants. The plot thickens as the Turtles come to terms with their place in the human world. They truly learn what it means to be heroes.
The voice cast was nothing short of stellar.
Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon brought the four brothers to life. Their performance featured an infectious energy that captured their youthful spirit. A host of talented actors joined them. The rest of the cast includes Jackie Chan as Master Splinter, Seth Rogen as Bebop, John Cena as Rocksteady, Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, and many more.
Mutant Mayhem was also a commercial success. It would gross over $175 million worldwide. The franchise also brought in billions with merchandise and toy sales, a testament to its broad appeal and the enduring popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. The film’s unique animation style blends traditional and CGI elements. It was praised for its bold and colorful visuals, perfectly matching its vibrant tone.
For those eagerly awaiting more Turtle action, a follow-up to Mutant Mayhem is already underway. But in the meantime, fans can enjoy Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is an all-new Paramount+ original series premiering on August 9th. This 2D animated series promises to keep the Turtle power alive, offering fresh stories and adventures.
