Jon Voight Makes Appearance at Atlas/Seaboard Re-Launch at NYCC

Jon Voight celebrates Atlas/Seaboard’s 50th Anniversary at New York Comic Con.

Atlas/Seaboard was the iconic predecessor to Marvel Comics. It made a grand return at New York Comic Con. This event celebrated its 50th anniversary. The relaunch event was led by Steven Paul and Marty Abrams. Actor Jon Voight joined them. This marked a new chapter for the legendary comic book publisher. Atlas/Seaboard had a short but impactful run in the 1970s. It was home to a range of unique characters. These characters are being revitalized for a new generation of fans.

A Nostalgic Comeback

During a lively discussion at the event, Steven Paul reflected on the evolution of comic conventions, comparing them to a “Cirque du Soleil” for comic fans, a far cry from the simple, table-based events of decades past. “It’s really imaginative and wonderful to see what’s happening with Comic Con,” he said, highlighting the creative and expansive nature of modern comic events.

Paul shared his own personal love for comics, which started when he was a young boy, diving into the worlds of Archie, Richie Rich, and the superheroes from both Marvel and DC. “Since I was a little kid, I was a DC, Marvel, and Atlas fan,” he said, underscoring the nostalgia that fuels the current relaunch.

Marty Abrams on the Evolution of Comics

Marty Abrams, who played a key role in the original and relaunch efforts, spoke about how comic book characters have evolved over time, citing the original Iron Man eight-inch figure he created before the character became a movie icon. He emphasized the way these characters have grown from “a stick shift to an action figure, from an action figure to a glorious positioning.”

“Today, 16% to 18% of toys being purchased are for adults,” said Abrams, pointing out how comic characters have continued to resonate with audiences of all ages. Abrams believes that this intergenerational love for characters and stories is part of what makes comics timeless.

Catching Up with Jon Voight

Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere was Megalopolis star Jon Voight, who shared a touching memory about his introduction to comics. “My grandmother had a tiny candy store, and I was the grandson interested in comics. I had the job of cutting the strings and putting comics on the shelf, and I read every single one,” he recalled.

Voight’s favorite characters growing up included classics like Captain America and Tarzan, highlighting the early days of American superhero culture. During a private conversation, Voight expressed excitement about the resurgence of Atlas/Seaboard and the ability of modern visual effects to bring comic book imagination to life on screen.

The Revamped Lineup

At the heart of the Atlas/Seaboard relaunch are characters. They bring a blend of classic comic book tropes. They also introduce fresh narratives. Notable titles include:

  • Devilina: A supernatural character who fights to banish her devilish brother back to hell, with a live-action film in development.
  • Phoenix: Featuring an astronaut stranded in the Arctic with aliens, exploring themes of isolation and existential dread.
  • The Grim Ghost: A tale of a highwayman who collects souls for the devil, blending elements of horror and supernatural action.
  • The Hands of the Dragon: A martial arts story centered on revenge, set against the backdrop of Los Angeles.
  • Sgt. Stryker’s Death Squad: A gritty wartime saga about an unlikely military commander.
  • Lomax: A sharp-shooting cop whose complex past ties him to post-war struggles and survival.

The announcement at New York Comic Con was not just about reviving characters. It was about building a bridge between the past and the present, ensuring that Atlas/Seaboard’s legacy lives on. The brand is preparing to expand into new media, including feature films and modernized comics. The spirit of the 1970s continues to guide its vision.

Atlas/Seaboard’s return was a highlight of New York Comic Con. It reminded fans and newcomers alike why comics remain a beloved cultural staple. As Steven Paul put it, “With visual effects today, you can really do anything, and that’s the beauty of bringing these stories to life.”
