The hit cast reunites for one last adventure as Jumanji escapes the game and unleashes its biggest threat yet.

The game is changing one final time. Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the third and final chapter in the modern Jumanji trilogy. Reuniting franchise stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, the upcoming action-adventure promises to raise the stakes by doing something the series has never done before: bringing Jumanji into the real world.
Jumanji Leaves the Game Behind
The previous films challenged their heroes to survive inside the dangerous world of Jumanji. This time, the rules have changed.
According to the official synopsis: “Our heroes have escaped the perilous jungles of Jumanji before, but this time Jumanji breaks free of its console, unleashing its chaos into our world.”
That simple twist dramatically expands the franchise’s scope, turning the real world into the newest level of the game. Rather than being transported into Jumanji, humanity will have to survive as its creatures, dangers, and unpredictable challenges invade reality.

The Stars Have Become One of Hollywood’s Favorite Ensembles
The chemistry between the four lead actors has been one of the defining strengths of the modern Jumanji films.

Dwayne Johnson remains one of Hollywood’s biggest box office stars, leading franchises including Fast & Furious, Moana, Black Adam, and Disney’s live-action Moana. His portrayal of Dr. Smolder Bravestone became an instant fan favorite.
Kevin Hart continues to balance blockbuster comedies and action films, starring in Ride Along, Central Intelligence, and Lift, as well as Borderlands and numerous stand-up specials. His comedic partnership with Johnson has become one of modern Hollywood’s most successful pairings.
Jack Black has enjoyed a career renaissance in recent years with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, Kung Fu Panda, School of Rock, and the Jumanji series, where his performance as Professor Shelly Oberon—inhabited by a teenage girl—became one of the franchise’s biggest comedic highlights.
Karen Gillan has become one of genre entertainment’s most recognizable stars thanks to her roles as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Amy Pond in Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Endgame, and Late Bloomers. Her martial arts skills and comedic timing made Ruby Roundhouse one of the trilogy’s breakout characters.
Building on Two Massive Hits
Sony successfully reinvented the Jumanji franchise in 2017 with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Rather than revisiting the magical board game from the original film, the story evolved the concept into a mysterious video game that transported teenagers into avatar bodies inside its dangerous world.
The film became a surprise global phenomenon, earning nearly $1 billion worldwide and becoming one of Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing films.
Its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), expanded the mythology by introducing new avatar swaps, additional regions of Jumanji, and memorable performances from Danny DeVito and Danny Glover through the game’s body-switching mechanics. The sequel also became another worldwide success, proving audiences still had an appetite for the adventurous franchise.
Now, Jumanji: Open World appears poised to conclude that story by taking the series beyond the game itself.
It All Started With Robin Williams
Long before the video game adventures, Jumanji first captivated audiences in 1995.
Directed by Joe Johnston, the original film starred Robin Williams as Alan Parrish, a man trapped inside a magical jungle-themed board game for more than two decades. When two children unknowingly resumed the game years later, dangerous animals, natural disasters, and supernatural threats spilled into their hometown until the game was finally completed.
The film also starred Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce, Jonathan Hyde, David Alan Grier, and Bebe Neuwirth. Although it received mixed reviews upon release, it became a beloved family classic whose practical effects, imagination, and heartfelt story have endured for generations.
Based on an Award-Winning Children’s Book
The Jumanji franchise is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s acclaimed 1981 children’s picture book of the same name. The Caldecott Medal-winning author introduced readers to the mysterious jungle board game that transforms ordinary players’ surroundings into extraordinary adventures.
While the modern trilogy shifted from a board game to a video game console, Jumanji: Open World appears to bring the franchise full circle by once again allowing the game’s dangers to invade the real world.
With the original stars returning, an inventive new premise, and the promise of a grand finale, Jumanji: Open World looks ready to deliver one last adventure that celebrates both the modern trilogy and the timeless magic that began over four decades ago.
Jumanji: Open World opens in theaters on December 25, 2026.
