Tyler Perry’s ‘Duplicity’ starring Kat Graham delivers twists, drama, and social relevance.

Tyler Perry’s latest thriller, Duplicity, now streaming on Prime Video, is a gripping legal drama that keeps audiences guessing at every turn. Starring Kat Graham as Marley, a high-powered attorney, the film follows her as she takes on a deeply personal case: uncovering the truth behind the shooting of her best friend Fela’s (Meagan Tandy) husband (Joshua Adeyeye). With the help of her boyfriend (Tyler Lepley), a former cop turned private investigator, Marley navigates a treacherous web of deception and betrayal.
Written, directed, and produced by Perry, Duplicity delivers both edge-of-your-seat suspense and emotional weight. The film’s themes touch on injustice, accountability, and the pursuit of truth while maintaining Perry’s signature storytelling style—packed with shocking revelations.
Kat Graham on Taking the Lead
In a recent conversation, Kat Graham opened up about what drew her to the role of Marley.
“I mean, so many things,” Graham said. “I do a lot of work as a humanitarian, right? So some of these topics are constantly at the forefront of my mind, and I’m always trying to figure out a way to try and push the needle forward, whether it’s through awareness or, you know, my work with these different organizations. So I felt very invested in making sure that we got this right.”
Graham also shared how her personal background influenced her connection to the role.
“My mother was Johnnie Cochran’s paralegal secretary. My father was a lawyer before he got into being a jazz exec. My cousin is a civil rights attorney, a pretty big one,” she revealed. “So I’ve always been around, whether it’s like diplomats or lawmakers, and still, especially with all the UN stuff, very, very much a part of people that are desperately trying to raise awareness for really important causes and feeling that they might fall on deaf ears.”
Beyond the real-world resonance, Graham was drawn to the film’s unpredictable nature.
“I love thrillers where everything is not what it seems,” she said. “That’s my jam, you know what I’m saying? Like, my favorite movies, period, always have that kind of twist, right? So being a part of this where it’s grounded in reality and on a topic that we all care about and we all feel connected to, but also fully entertaining.”
A Film That Stirs Emotions
Perry’s storytelling evokes a wide range of emotions, something Graham acknowledged when discussing the audience’s reaction.
“I was guessing. It was super entertaining, but I felt the emotional beats too,” she said. “Like, I was also getting angry watching it. I felt sad, I felt all the emotions of it. But it kept me on my toes, fully entertained.”
She also shared how her husband—normally quick to predict plot twists—was fully engaged, reacting in real-time to the film’s surprises.
“My husband is the biggest—I sometimes hate watching movies with him because he’ll be like, ‘This is gonna happen. This is gonna happen.’ And I’m like, ‘Can I just enjoy it without you?’ And it always happens,” she laughed. “But he was watching it, and he’s like yelling at the screen and being like, ‘How did this… and what, what… I mean, what is she… and why would that…’ And Tyler Perry keeps you guessing in this one. Like, totally.”
From the Courtroom to the Recording Booth
While Graham shines in Duplicity, fans of animation know her as the voice of April O’Neil in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She brought her signature energy to the role, drawing from her own personality.
“That’s really my personality, people,” she laughed. “I’m kind of like, it’s kind of my dirty secret that I’m kind of this, like, you know, zany, kind of ridiculous human.”
Graham’s love for animation extended beyond her lead role. During recording sessions at Nickelodeon, she eagerly voiced additional characters just for fun.
“I wouldn’t even want the sessions to end,” she said. “And then I would be like, ‘Hey, you guys have any more voices that I can, like, play around with?’ So they let me do the voices for different characters that they needed voices for in the episode, which was great.”
She also revealed her inner nerd.
“I love TMNT and that whole universe. And I’m also like a super nerd—nobody knows that, but I really am,” she admitted. “I totally—I’m not gonna say that. I just—I just love your Blockbuster reference shirt. I love old school. I love all that stuff.”
A Must-Watch Thriller
With Duplicity, Perry once again proves his knack for blending social commentary with gripping drama. Kat Graham’s powerhouse performance as Marley, combined with the film’s unpredictable twists, makes it a must-watch.
