“Landman” season 2 ends strong, and two standouts explain the show’s secret.

“Landman” Season 2 ended Sunday night with a finale that tied the season together cleanly. If you are behind, no worries. This story stays spoiler-free, but you should catch up soon. Set in the boomtowns of West Texas, the Paramount+ series tracks fortune seekers chasing opportunity among roughnecks and wildcat billionaires. The oil boom feels endless. It also reshapes the climate, the economy, and geopolitics.
Season 2 ramps up the pressure as secrets surface. Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton, gets squeezed from all directions. With M-Tex Oil looming and Cami Miller adding heat, survival turns brutal fast. As season 2 wraps up, I spoke with stars Mark Collie and Mustafa Speaks.
Mustafa Speaks, and Mark Collie Saw the Potential Early
“For me, it was reading the script — especially episode one — that made it click. I knew we had something special,” Speaks said. He credited co-creator Taylor Sheridan for setting the tone, adding, “Taylor just has a way of putting sauce on his projects that is undeniable.”

He also said Thornton’s presence clarified the show’s center of gravity. “When I read the script and saw what it was about, knowing that Billy Bob was attached to it and the engine of this show, I knew we had something special,” Speaks said.
Mark Collie said he arrived at the same conclusion from another angle. “When I knew Billy Bob was a part of it and started hearing about it, I knew it was probably going to be a success,” Collie said. “And then I felt I might be a part of it.”
Dialogue That Sounds Like Real Life
Collie said “Landman” doesn’t feel like typical TV chatter. He believes the dialogue lands because it plays like real speech. “When I read the conversations, they’re so real,” Collie said. “All the conversations seem not written, scripted.”

Then he zoomed out to the show’s scale. He recalled seeing the oil fields and the practical mayhem. “When I saw how big the production was, when I saw the oil fields and the explosions,” Collie said, “I mean, I’ve never seen anything that felt that real at that scale.”
Collie also shared Thornton’s reaction to the size of it all. “He said, ‘This should be in Technicolor on big screens,’” Collie said.
Why do their characters stick with Tommy?
Both actors tied their characters’ loyalty to Tommy’s directness. For Speaks, it starts with trust. “It’s his authenticity,” Speaks said. “He’s just real. He’s a straight shooter.”
Speaks said Boss mirrors that same approach, which creates instant alignment. “That’s who Boss is, too. Authentic. Straight shooter,” he said.
He also framed their bond as something deeper than business. “They combine at the nexus of fatherhood and excellence when it comes to work,” Speaks said. “So that’s what draws these two together for me.”

Collie described Sheriff Joburg’s connection to Tommy as long-running and personal. “They’ve been part of that community for a long time,” Collie said. “They’ve known each other … they’re virtually brothers.”
Because Collie has known Thornton for years, he said their scenes can feel less like performance and more like life. “Sometimes when we’re talking, it doesn’t feel like we’re acting,” Collie said. “It just feels like we’re having another dispute or something.”
Rig work over lottery luck
To close, I asked a question that fits “Landman’s” worldview. Would they work a rig every day for a shot at a payday? Or would they play the lottery every day and chase luck?
Speaks picked the grind. “For me, I’m a hustler, so I got to be on that rig earning my money,” he said.

Collie laughed off the lottery entirely. “I don’t do the lottery,” Collie said. “I just take $20 and take it and flush it down a commode.” He compared it to another habit he avoids. “It’s kind of like playing slots. I don’t like slots either,” Collie said. “But I do take chances with the rest of my career.”
Fans Now Wait for Season 3
“Landman” features an ensemble led by Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, and Sam Elliott. The cast also includes Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez, Kayla Wallace, Mark Collie, Colm Feore, James Jordan, and Mustafa Speaks.

With Season 2 now complete, fans are already itching for Season 3, which was announced. After hearing Speaks and Collie talk about authenticity and scale, that hunger makes sense. The series feels lived-in, huge, and unafraid to get messy.
