The best of both worlds returns as Miley Cyrus marks Hannah Montana milestone.

Two decades after a blonde wig changed pop culture forever, Miley Cyrus is going back where it all began. Disney+ announced the “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” will premiere on March 24, celebrating the series that helped shape a generation of television viewers and music fans. The event will be filmed before a live studio audience and feature an in-depth conversation between Cyrus and host Alex Cooper.
The special promises an intimate look at how the character was created and how the show’s influence continues today. It will also include archival footage and reconstructed sets, including the Stewart family living room and the famous Hannah Montana closet.
A Show That Defined a Generation
When Hannah Montana debuted on Disney Channel in 2006, the story followed Miley Stewart, a normal teenager living a secret double life as a global pop star. The concept blended sitcom storytelling with concert spectacle, creating a format that became a blueprint for kids’ television.
The Emmy-nominated series quickly turned into a worldwide phenomenon. Its success expanded beyond television, producing 14 platinum and 18 gold albums and spawning two feature films. Fashion trends, catchphrases, and songs from the show became part of everyday life for young audiences in the late 2000s.
Today, the franchise has surpassed half a billion hours streamed globally on Disney+.
Miley Cyrus Reflects on the Legacy
Cyrus, who was 13 when the series premiered, said the role remains central to her identity.
“‘Hannah Montana’ will always be a part of who I am,” Cyrus said. “What started as a TV show became a shared experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans, and I’ll always be thankful for that connection. The fact that it still means so much to people all these years later is something I’m very proud of. This ‘Hannahversary’ is my way of celebrating and thanking the fans who’ve stood by me for 20 years.”
Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis described the project as a tribute to longtime viewers.
“‘Hannah Montana’ opened the door for so many fans to dream big, sing loud, and embrace every side of themselves,” Davis said. “Partnering with Miley on this special is a dream, and we want it to be a love letter to the fans.”
From Disney Star to Global Superstar
After the show ended in 2011, Cyrus transitioned into a chart-topping music career marked by reinvention. Her evolution from teen idol to Grammy-winning artist demonstrated a rare longevity among Disney alumni, while still maintaining ties to the character that introduced her to audiences. The anniversary special revisits that journey, highlighting how the fictional pop persona helped launch a real-world music icon.
In addition to the interview, the special will feature nostalgic musical callbacks and previously unseen footage from the series’ production years. Fans will also be able to revisit the full franchise on Disney+, including all four seasons, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert, with a nonstop themed stream launching Feb. 19.
Twenty years later, the best of both worlds returns — this time as a celebration of the past and a reminder of the cultural moment that never really left.
