Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Trailer Reveals Greta Gerwig’s Magical New World

Netflix unveils the first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated fantasy adventure, starring Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep.

The magical world of Narnia is returning to the big screen, but this time, audiences will discover how it all began. Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, a sweeping fantasy adventure written and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

Based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved 1955 novel, the upcoming film marks the first screen adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, taking viewers back to the creation of Narnia long before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Following the massive success of Barbie, Gerwig is bringing her creative vision to one of literature’s most celebrated fantasy worlds. The film promises an ambitious cinematic experience filled with magic, adventure, and the wonder that has captivated generations of readers.

Netflix is also giving the film a major theatrical release, including IMAX screenings, before its streaming debut.

Greta Gerwig Brings the Origins of Narnia to Life

Unlike previous adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia, which focused on the adventures of the Pevensie children, The Magician’s Nephew explores the beginnings of the enchanted world.

Lewis’ original novel introduces readers to the events that lead to Narnia’s creation, including the arrival of Aslan, the powerful lion whose presence becomes central to the entire franchise.

The story explores how ordinary people discover extraordinary worlds and how their adventures eventually shape the future of Narnia.

For Gerwig, adapting the novel represents a deeply personal opportunity to revisit a story that influenced her childhood.

“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” Gerwig told Netflix’s Tudum.

The filmmaker explained that the novel’s imaginative depiction of a world created through music stayed with her long before she entered the film industry.

“I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being.”

Gerwig also credited Lewis’ storytelling with shaping her belief in magic, adventure, and the possibility that extraordinary things could happen to ordinary people.

Her adaptation aims to introduce those ideas to a new generation while giving longtime fans an opportunity to experience Narnia’s creation on an unprecedented cinematic scale.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew Features a Star-Studded Cast

Netflix has assembled an impressive ensemble for the fantasy adventure, combining established Hollywood stars with emerging young actors.

Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead the film alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep.

The supporting cast also includes Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.

While Netflix has revealed the principal cast, additional details surrounding several characters remain under wraps.

The combination of rising talent and established performers gives Gerwig an ensemble capable of bringing Lewis’ imaginative characters and magical world to life.

The film also reunites Gerwig with several creative collaborators from her previous work.

Barbie Composers Return for Narnia’s Magical Soundtrack

Music will play an important role in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, especially given the story’s connection to the creation of Narnia through Aslan’s song.

Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously collaborated with Gerwig on Barbie, will compose the film’s original score.

Their work on Barbie included the Academy Award-winning song “What Was I Made For?,” performed by Billie Eilish.

George Drakoulias will oversee music supervision.

The creative decision is especially meaningful considering Gerwig’s childhood fascination with Lewis’ concept of a universe brought into existence through music.

With Ronson and Wyatt involved, the film’s soundtrack could become an essential part of Gerwig’s interpretation of the fantasy world.

A New Beginning for The Chronicles of Narnia

Originally published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book released in Lewis’ seven-part fantasy series, although its story takes place before the other novels.

The franchise began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950 and grew into one of the most successful literary properties in history.

Across all seven books, The Chronicles of Narnia has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide, reaching readers in more than 70 countries and receiving translations into more than 60 languages.

Previous theatrical adaptations introduced millions of moviegoers to characters such as Aslan, the White Witch and the Pevensie siblings.

The 2005 adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe launched a theatrical franchise that continued with Prince Caspian in 2008 and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010.

Gerwig’s film takes a different approach by beginning with the origins of Narnia rather than immediately revisiting the familiar adventures of Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.

The decision allows audiences to experience the mythology from its earliest moments while introducing a new cinematic interpretation of Lewis’ world.

Narnia Receives Major IMAX and Netflix Release

Netflix is positioning Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew as a major global theatrical event, with audiences getting an opportunity to experience Gerwig’s fantasy epic on the biggest screens available.

NARNIA: THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW opens in theaters February 12, 2027, with exclusive IMAX previews beginning February 10, before streaming on Netflix April 2, 2027.
