Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files Reboot Officially Ordered at Hulu With Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel

The Sinners and Black Panther filmmaker will bring a new generation of supernatural mysteries to Hulu with a reimagining of the beloved sci-fi franchise.

The truth is still out there, and a new generation of FBI agents is preparing to uncover it. Hulu has officially ordered Ryan Coogler‘s highly anticipated reimagining of The X-Files to series, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel leading the cast. The upcoming science fiction drama will stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

The announcement marks a major step forward for the franchise, which has remained one of television’s most influential supernatural dramas since its debut in 1993. Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Black Panther, Creed and Sinners, wrote and directed the pilot and will serve as an executive producer.

Unlike the original series, which followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the new project will introduce two entirely new characters investigating unexplained phenomena.

Ryan Coogler Brings a New Vision to The X-Files

The upcoming series follows two highly decorated FBI agents with vastly different personalities who form an unexpected partnership after being assigned to a long-shuttered division dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena.

The premise brings back the foundation of the original series while introducing new characters, mysteries, and perspectives.

Coogler expressed his excitement about taking on the beloved franchise, revealing how much the opportunity means to him as a longtime fan.

“I’ve loved The X-Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler said.

He also praised original creator Chris Carter and explained his approach to honoring the show’s legacy while developing something new.

“What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”

Coogler praised the contributions of Deadwyler, Patel, and the production team, emphasizing how their performances helped establish the new direction for the franchise.

Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel Lead the New Cast

Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will headline the series as the two FBI agents investigating mysterious cases.

Deadwyler has earned widespread acclaim for her performances in Till, The Piano Lesson and The Woman in the Yard. Patel is known for his work in Yesterday, Tenet, and HBO Max’s Station Eleven.

The actors previously appeared together in Station Eleven, making their reunion especially interesting as they prepare to explore an entirely different television universe.

The production has also assembled a supporting cast that includes Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton in guest roles.

While specific character details remain under wraps, Patel previously confirmed that he and Deadwyler are playing new characters rather than updated versions of Mulder and Scully.

The X-Files Returns With a New Creative Team

Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner and executive producer, working alongside Coogler to bring the series to television. Original creator Chris Carter is also attached as an executive producer.

Coogler’s Proximity Media, Onyx Collective and 20th Television are behind the production.

The original X-Files became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its combination of government conspiracies, alien investigations, supernatural encounters, and unsettling standalone mysteries.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson starred as Mulder and Scully throughout the show’s original nine-season run, which began in 1993. The franchise later returned for two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018 and produced two theatrical films.

Coogler’s involvement brings considerable expectations following his work on Sinners, which further demonstrated his ability to blend horror, compelling characters, and ambitious storytelling.

With an official series order secured, the latest incarnation of The X-Files moves beyond its initial pilot stage and closer to introducing audiences to another chapter of paranormal investigations.

THE X-FILES will premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, with a release date to be announced.
