NBA Legend Jerry West, The NBA Logo Silhouette, Passes Away

Jerry West, the NBA legend whose iconic silhouette graces the league’s logo, passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 86. His family confirmed his death, saying he died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles. West, born May 28, 1938, in Chelyan, West Virginia, had a storied career that left an indelible mark on the NBA. He played his entire 14-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, earning the nickname “Mr. Clutch” for his extraordinary performances in crucial moments. West’s remarkable play earned him 14 All-Star selections and 10 All-NBA First-Team honors.

Selected second overall in the 1960 NBA Draft, West quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier players. Known for his deadly shooting, defensive prowess, and unparalleled work ethic, he averaged 27 points per game over his career. West led the Lakers to nine NBA Finals, finally capturing his only championship as a player in 1972.

Beyond his playing career, West’s influence on the game extended to coaching and executive roles. He served as the Lakers’ head coach from 1976 to 1979. Later, he transitioned to the front office, where he was instrumental in building the Lakers’ championship teams in the 1980s. West’s eye for talent was pivotal in assembling the “Showtime” Lakers, a team that won five titles in the decade. In 2002, West took his talents to the Memphis Grizzlies as their general manager. He helped turn the franchise into a playoff contender. His keen basketball acumen and leadership also played a critical role in shaping the Golden State Warriors dynasty, as he served as an executive board member, contributing to their success in the mid-2010s.

West’s silhouette became the NBA logo in 1969.

It symbolizes his enduring legacy in basketball. Although he modestly downplayed the significance of being the logo, it remains a testament to his impact on the sport. West’s accolades include induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

West is survived by his wife, Karen, their children, and numerous grandchildren. The basketball community mourns the loss of one of its true icons, a player whose impact transcended the court and whose legacy will forever be enshrined in the sport he loved.
