The new series comes from Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, the writers behind Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Venom. Known for their work on high-energy, adventure-driven narratives, the duo aims to blend their signature style with the beloved elements of the Scooby-Doo franchise.
A History of Scooby-Doo in Live-Action
This isn’t the first time Scooby-Doo has been brought to life outside of animation. The franchise made its live-action debut in 2002 with Scooby-Doo, directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn. The film starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma, and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. Neil Fanning provided the voice of Scooby-Doo. The movie was a box office success, leading to a 2004 sequel, Monsters Unleashed.
Since then, several live-action adaptations have followed, including Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins (2009) and Curse of the Lake Monster (2010), both of which aired on Cartoon Network as prequels. More recently, Daphne & Velma (2018) attempted to bring a fresh perspective by focusing on the two female leads.
A Fresh Spin on a Classic
Netflix’s new series aims to stand apart from its predecessors by taking a modern, character-driven approach. While past adaptations leaned into the campy and comedic aspects of the franchise, this series teases a darker mystery element while still retaining the humor and heart that have made Scooby-Doo a fan favorite for decades.
A release date has yet to be announced, but with Netflix backing the project and experienced writers at the helm, fans can expect a thrilling new take on Mystery Inc.
Stay tuned for more updates, including casting announcements and a first look at the new live-action Scooby-Doo series.
