Steve is a gritty, human story from Tim Mielants and Max Porter.

Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy leads Steve, an emotional mid-’90s drama based on Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. Directed by Tim Mielants and written by Porter, the film weaves together themes of redemption, mental health, and resilience in a world that has abandoned those most in need.

Murphy plays Steve, the headteacher of a last-chance reform school, fighting to keep his institution alive amidst looming closure. As the day unfolds, Steve battles not only for his students but also against his own mental health struggles.
Parallel Paths of Survival
Alongside Steve’s journey is the story of Shy, played by Jay Lycurgo. Shy is a troubled teen teetering between his past mistakes and an uncertain future, struggling to reconcile his vulnerability with violent impulses. The film captures a raw, one-day snapshot of two lives in crisis, set against a backdrop of societal neglect.
Stellar Ensemble Cast
Joining Murphy and Lycurgo is a stacked cast that includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, Emily Watson, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry, Archie Fisher, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Priyanga Burford, George Fouracres, Marcus Garvey, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Roger Allam.
A Soundtrack to Match the Mood
The score, composed by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow, is set to heighten the film’s intense emotional tone, blending atmospheric arrangements with a 1990s sonic texture.
Steve arrives in select theaters September 19, 2025, before its global Netflix debut on October 3. With its powerful performances and gripping narrative, the film is poised to be one of the year’s most talked-about dramas.
