Never Let Go: A Tense Thriller with Stellar Performances – Review

Never Let Go’s young actors shine alongside Halle Berry.

“Never Let Go,” directed by Alexandre Aja, known for his intense thrillers like The Hills Have Eyes and Crawl, is a psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Starring Halle Berry alongside young talents Anthony B. Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV, the film explores the terrifying world outside a family’s doorstep, raising questions about survival, fear, and trust.

The story follows a mother, played by Berry, and her twin sons, portrayed by Jenkins and Daggs, who are forced to stay tethered together to survive a mysterious evil that has overtaken the world. The family clings to each other—literally—as their only means of survival, with ropes binding them to ensure no one ever lets go. However, as fear and doubt set in, the tension between belief and reality begins to tear them apart. The narrative combines psychological thrills with horror, making for a nerve-wracking experience.

Berry delivers a powerhouse performance, grounding the film in raw emotion. She portrays a mother willing to do anything to protect her children, and her fear feels authentic. However, the young stars, Jenkins and Daggs, truly steal the show. Their performances are captivating and filled with intensity, showing maturity beyond their years.

While the acting is superb, Never Let Go stumbles in other areas. The plot, though intriguing, feels underdeveloped at times. The movie seems to take inspiration from M. Night Shyamalan’s work, especially The Village, as it hints at deeper mysteries without fully exploring them. The result is a story that feels incomplete. There’s a lingering sense that more backstory or context could have elevated the tension and made the stakes feel higher.

Instant Entry – Never Let Go

The film’s pacing also presents a challenge. While there are moments of real tension and fear, particularly during the scenes where the family’s bond is put to the test, the movie drags in its quieter moments. There’s a lot of waiting for something to happen, and the promised horrors often feel tame compared to the intensity built up earlier. A few more jump scares or unexpected twists could have helped maintain the momentum. Never Let Go is also rated R, and it’s easy to see why. Some graphic imagery and unsettling sequences contribute to the horror, but the intensity might catch viewers off guard.

Verdict

I give Never Let Go 3 out of 5 stars. The movie is a solid thriller with great performances, but it could have benefitted from a tighter script and a more fleshed-out story. Don’t forge to enter to win a pair of tickets above!
