Lionsgate’s The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage, hits theaters May 2.

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions will release The Surfer, a psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage, in theaters nationwide on May 2, 2025. The film is directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) and written by Thomas Martin.

The film follows a man who returns to the sun-drenched beach of his childhood with the hope of surfing alongside his son. However, his plans take a dark turn when he encounters a group of territorial locals who enforce an unwritten rule: “Don’t live here, don’t surf here.” As tensions rise under the blistering summer heat, humiliation and rage drive the man into a psychological battle that pushes him to his limits.
The Surfer boasts a supporting cast that includes Julian McMahon (Fantastic Four), Nic Cassim (Reckoning), Miranda Tapsell (The Sapphires), Alexander Bertrand (Les Norton), and Justin Rosniak (Animal Kingdom). The film promises an intense, character-driven narrative anchored by Cage’s signature ability to portray complex, emotionally charged roles.

Best known for his dynamic performances in films such as Longlegs, Mandy, Pig, and Leaving Las Vegas, Cage has made a career out of choosing bold and unconventional projects. The Surfer appears to be another gripping addition to his diverse filmography. It will offer a mix of psychological tension, personal turmoil, and an exploration of human resilience in the face of isolation and conflict.

With a blend of sun-soaked visuals and psychological intensity, The Surfer aims to captivate audiences with its atmospheric storytelling and an unsettling descent into paranoia. As the waves crash and the temperature rises, Cage’s character finds himself caught in a struggle not just against the locals but against his own unraveling mind.
The Surfer hits theaters on May 2, 2025.
