‘Longlegs’ Mixes Chilling Suspense with Mainstream Horror – Movie Review

Longlegs will leave a lasting impression on you.

I have not seen a movie in a while that truly made my skin crawl and made me jump and squirm as Osgood Perkins delivers a chilling cinematic experience with Longlegs. Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage are at the top of their game in a blend of suspense and mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Longlegs follows an FBI agent in pursuit of a serial killer, uncovering a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree. Perkins, known for his atmospheric storytelling, masterfully builds a gritty and haunting world. The concept and unique storytelling, paired with a very retro aesthetic, create an experience that is hard to shake off.

The build-up and tension are meticulously crafted.

Longlegs draws you into a compelling and unique narrative. Maika Monroe delivers an intriguing performance, portraying the determined FBI agent with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Nicolas Cage, as the enigmatic killer, is nothing short of terrifying. His portrayal is likely to haunt audiences long after the credits roll.

However, despite its strong start and gripping middle, the film’s conclusion leaves much to be desired. The third act seems to lean too heavily into the mainstream horror tropes that have become all too familiar. This shift felt unnecessary, as the film had already established a compelling narrative without resorting to such clichés. The ending, while intense, raised more questions than it answered, leaving a sense of dissatisfaction. Longlegs is polarizing and will undoubtedly spark debate among viewers. Its gritty nature and unique take on the thriller genre set it apart, yet the overreliance on mainstream horror elements in the climax detracts from its overall impact.

Osgood Perkins, the film’s writer and director, brings a unique voice to the genre. Son of the legendary Anthony Perkins, famous for his role as Norman Bates in Psycho, Osgood has carved out his niche in horror. Before turning to directing, he had an acting career, appearing in films like Legally Blonde and Six Degrees of Separation. His previous directorial efforts, including The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, have established him as a distinctive storyteller with a penchant for eerie, atmospheric horror. Perkins demonstrates his ability to create tension and craft memorable characters. While the film stumbles towards the end, it remains a compelling watch, mainly due to the performances of Monroe and Cage. Monroe, in particular, shines and leaves audiences wanting more from her.

Verdict

I give Longlegs 3 out of 5 stars. It is a solid addition to the thriller genre. Despite its flaws, it offers a chilling experience that thriller fans won’t want to miss.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
