Night Swim finds itself drowning with shallow horrors.

“Night Swim,” directed by Bryce McGuire and produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse attempts to dive into the horror genre with a promising premise but falls short of creating a truly immersive and terrifying experience. The film revolves around Ray Waller, played convincingly by Wyatt Russell. He is a former baseball player battling a degenerative illness. The Waller family moves into a new home, where the shimmering backyard pool becomes a source of joy for the children and a potential therapeutic space for Ray. However, the seemingly idyllic setting harbors a dark secret that unleashes a malevolent force, dragging the family into the depths of inescapable terror.
Fails to capitalize on the horrors of the deep end.
As someone who once harbored a childhood fear of the deep end, the concept of a horror film centered around a swimming pool intrigued me. However, “Night Swim” fails to capitalize on its unique premise, delivering cheap scares that do little to elicit genuine fear. The horror effects come across as tacky, with some depictions of the “dead” being downright laughable. This cheapening of the horror elements significantly detracts from the movie’s overall impact.
While the cast, particularly Russell, delivers solid performances, the film needs more depth in its exploration of the supernatural elements. James Wan’s involvement, known for his successful franchises like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, may have raised expectations, but his influence may have hindered this case. The attempt to introduce a logical explanation for the pool’s curse involving aquifers and springs creates more confusion than intrigue. The film opens up a plot hole by failing to convincingly explain why the curse only affects this particular pool when tied to the broader water system of the neighborhood. Additionally, “Night Swim” struggles with pacing, making the film feel like it sometimes drags. While horror movies often benefit from a sense of urgency, this film fails to maintain a consistently gripping pace.
Verdict
I give Night Swim 3 out of 5 stars. Despite the promising premise and a commendable performance by Wyatt Russell, “Night Swim” falls short of expectations. The film’s attempt to blend supernatural elements with a more logical explanation results in a convoluted narrative lacking more depth to engage the audience.
