God of War series taps Ólafur Darri Ólafsson to play the God of Thunder.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has signed on to play Thor in Prime Video’s live-action “God of War,” a series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Based on PlayStation’s massively popular, ancient mythology-themed video game, the series has a two-season order. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver, and casting has begun.
Thor’s Series Description Paints a Haunted God
Thor is the God of Thunder, a mountain of a man who has weathered many battles. However, his actions in a war fought long ago now haunt his waking hours. Once the loyal soldier of Asgard and his father’s right-hand man, Thor is now presented as a shadow of his former self. He drowns himself in alcohol and tries not to think about the price he paid.
Keeping his wife and children at arm’s length has only deepened his isolation. Even so, the power and danger of the God of Thunder is still there, sitting just beneath the surface.
Story Centers on Kratos and Atreus
“God of War” follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god. Atreus, meanwhile, tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Previously announced cast members include Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Max Parker as Heimdall.
Ólafsson’s Recent and Upcoming Work
Ólafsson can currently be seen in “Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue,” “Severance” Season 2, “Your Friends and Neighbors,” “Somebody Somewhere” Season 3 and “La Palma.” His upcoming slate includes “121212,” a heist series for Apple TV+; “A Winter’s Journey” for Sony Pictures Classics; and “Blood on Snow,” a feature film directed by Cary Fukunaga. He also stars in and executive produces “Reykjavík Fusion” through his Icelandic production hub, ACT4.

His previous television credits include the Golden Globe-nominated “The Missing,” three seasons of “Trapped,” “The Tourist,” “The Widow,” “NOS4A2,” “Quarry,” “True Detective,” and two seasons of “Lady Dynamite.” On the film side, Ólafsson has appeared in “Eurovision” and “Murder Mystery” for Netflix, along with “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and “The Meg,” among other projects.

Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye has signed on to direct the first two episodes of “God of War.” His recent credits include “Shōgun,” “The Boys,” and “Fallout.”
The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner.
