Purple Rain, the iconic Film Starring Prince, turns 40.

This year, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic 1984 film “Purple Rain.” It would star the legendary musician Prince in his film acting debut. For this special 40th-anniversary release, “Purple Rain” has been meticulously restored from an 8K scan of the original 35mm camera negative. The picture offers the most authentic presentation framing ever released for home viewing. The digitally restored picture features high dynamic range (HDR) color grading, and the film’s audio has been restored from the original Dolby Stereo elements, resulting in a newly remastered 5.1 audio presentation.

“Purple Rain” stars Prince as The Kid, a talented but troubled young musician. The film also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos, and Clarence Williams III. Prince starred in the film and composed and produced its original songs. It includes the iconic tracks “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” “Purple Rain” received critical acclaim upon its release, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and the Grammy Award for Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special. Prince’s performance also earned him the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
The 4K Ultra HD release includes a wealth of special features.
It features commentary by director Albert Magnoli, producer Robert Cavallo, and cinematographer Donald E. Thorin.
