Sam Rockwell leads Brad Bird’s retrofuturistic detective adventure alongside Scarlett Johansson in Netflix’s new animated mystery.
The man behind The Incredibles and The Iron Giant is bringing a new mystery to Netflix with the highly anticipated Ray Gunn! Today, Netflix revealed the official trailer for Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn, which will premiere in select theaters in early December and on streaming later. Additionally, Ray Gunn will also have a limited release on 70mm screens nationwide.
In addition to the trailer, Netflix also revealed new looks at Brad Bird’s upcoming animated feature. These new looks see Sam Rockwell‘s titular detective finding himself with a new case dealing with murder, corruption, and more. Furthermore, a new poster was also revealed.
Ray Gunn sees a world where aliens and humans live together in the retrofuturistic 1930s city of Metropia. Ray, voiced by Rockwell, is an experienced detective who’s dealt with alien-centric cases for most of his career. However, when a case involving Venus Nova, one of Metropia’s superstars voiced by Scarlett Johansson, is given to him, Ray must figure out who’s the perpetrator while trying not to get played.
For animation lovers, Brad Bird is one of the most recognizable names in the medium. Bird helped bring Pixar favorites like The Incredibles franchise and Ratatouille to life, earning acclaim for his work in animation. He also stepped into live-action filmmaking with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which became the franchise’s highest-grossing installment until 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
Bird will return in 2018 as a writer on The Incredibles 3 and serve as an executive producer as well.
However, with the story, stakes, and style that Bird has created with Ray Gunn, the film is an exciting return to form for Bird.
The ensemble cast of Ray Gunn is rounded out by Tom Waits, Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck, and Patton Oswalt.
Brad Bird directed and wrote the upcoming feature alongside Matthew Robbins. Producers include Bird, John Lasseter, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg producing for Skydance Animation.
Ray Gunn premieres in select theaters on December 4 and on Netflix on December 18.
