The Warner Bros. thriller brings M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks together for an unexpected combination of romance, mystery and supernatural terror.

Jake Gyllenhaal is searching for a fresh start before finding something far more dangerous in Remain, the latest supernatural thriller from M. Night Shyamalan.
Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled the first teaser for the upcoming movie, which pairs Shyamalan with bestselling romance author Nicholas Sparks. Their collaboration combines an emotional love story with a deadly mystery hiding beneath the surface of a quiet coastal town.
Jake Gyllenhaal Falls Into a Supernatural Mystery
Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal community to complete his latest project. The relocation offers Tate an opportunity to escape his isolation and rebuild his life.
His plans change when he encounters an alluring young woman named Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor. She slowly pulls Tate out of his shell, but their growing relationship places him at the center of a dangerous mystery hanging over the town.
The Remain teaser initially presents Tate and Wren’s story as a sweeping romance. Their connection soon takes a frightening turn as strange events begin surrounding them. Wren appears to know more about the danger than she reveals, leaving Tate to question the woman who helped him feel alive again.
Gyllenhaal and Dynevor lead a cast that also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders.
M. Night Shyamalan Teams With Nicholas Sparks
Remain marks an unusual creative partnership between Shyamalan and Sparks. Shyamalan is known for supernatural mysteries such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, Split, Knock at the Cabin and Trap. Sparks built his career around emotional romances, including The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and The Last Song.

The two storytellers developed the original concept together before approaching it through different formats. Shyamalan wrote the screenplay and directed the movie, while Sparks explored the story through a novel.
Their distinct creative styles make Remain more than a traditional romance or supernatural thriller. The movie appears designed to draw viewers into Tate and Wren’s relationship before revealing the darker forces surrounding them.
Shyamalan previously described Remain as one of his strongest-testing movies. The filmmaker’s involvement also raises the natural question surrounding nearly every one of his projects: What is really happening beneath the story being presented?
Remain Brings Together Shyamalan’s Creative Team
Shyamalan produced Remain alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park. Sparks serves as an executive producer.
The production also reunites Shyamalan with several experienced collaborators. Adolpho Veloso serves as director of photography, while Sam Lisenco leads the production design. Noëmi Preiswerk edited the movie, Caroline Duncan designed the costumes and Douglas Aibel handled casting.
Gabe Hilfer serves as music supervisor, with longtime Shyamalan collaborator James Newton Howard composing the score. Howard previously created the music for several of the filmmaker’s movies, including The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village and Split.
Remain opens in theaters on February 5, 2027.
