Takashi Yamazaki returns for the Godzilla Minus One sequel, which premieres at the New York Film Festival before opening in North American theaters.
The King of the Monsters is emerging once more, but will Godzilla be able to defeat the biggest threat that he’s faced time and time again? Toho will answer this question for audiences as Godzilla makes his return in Godzilla: Minus Zero, the highly anticipated sequel to Godzilla Minus One.
While the first film saw Godzilla wrecking havoc in the streets of Japan, Godzilla: Minus Zero sees a potentially more dangerous kaiju doing so. Although it is mostly kept a mystery, clues in the trailer, from neon yellow bolts of lightning to characters talking about something other than Godzilla, suggest that Ghidorah will be arriving. Previously, Ghidorah appeared in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where the beast from the stars temporarily took control of Earth’s monsters.
Toho’s take on Godzilla brings the kaijuverse back to its roots.
Godzilla: Minus Zero picks up two years after the first movie as the Shikishima family faces more disasters since Godzilla was not destroyed. Due to this, the Japanese authorities are preparing to enact an operation to wipe out any remaining kaijus. However, they may not know that these monsters don’t just come from the seas like Godzilla.
The new cast member joining the sequel include Jun Kunimura, Ko Maehara, Motosuke Iida, Kenji Misuhashi, Eita Okuno and Kai Inowaki. Furthermore, the main cast of Godzilla Minus Zero includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Min Tanaka, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, Miou Tanaka, Sae Nagatani, and Masami Nagasawa.
Toho’s Godzilla film series recently swept up a win for Best Visual Effects at the 2024 Oscars Ceremony. This year looks to continue that run of victories as Godzilla Minus Zero will premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26. Takashi Yamazaki, who once again serves as director, screenwriter and visual effects supervisor, is expected to appear at the premiere.
In addition, the film also marking several firsts, including being shot entirely in Japan and is the first Japanese production to Filmed For IMAX designation. As such, i’s very likely that this film will continue to push the boundaries Toho established.
Godzilla Minus Zero releases in North American theaters on November 6.
