Robin Williams Classics Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire Make 4K Debut

DEAD POETS SOCIETY and MRS. DOUBTFIRE will arrive on 4K Ultra HD for the first time, bringing two of Robin Williams’ most beloved performances home in upgraded editions.

Two Robin Williams classics are getting a major home entertainment upgrade. Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire will make their 4K debuts on September 29, with both films arriving on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

The new releases give longtime fans and a new generation of viewers the chance to experience two dramatically different performances from the late actor. Released four years apart, the films showcase his ability to move effortlessly between emotional drama and larger-than-life comedy while bringing genuine heart to both.

Both movies will be presented in 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR), an expanded color spectrum and immersive audio. They will also become available in 4K on digital platforms for the first time.

Dead Poets Society Comes to 4K Ultra HD

Directed by Peter Weir, Dead Poets Society was released in 1989 and stars Williams as John Keating, an unconventional English teacher who arrives at the tradition-bound Welton Academy.

Rather than simply asking his students to follow the rules and expectations placed before them, Keating encourages them to think independently, embrace poetry, and make the most of their lives. His unforgettable message of “Carpe Diem” becomes a driving force for his students as they begin questioning the paths others have chosen for them.

Williams’ performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and remains one of the defining dramatic roles of his career.

The film also stars Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, Gale Hansen, Dylan Kussman, Allelon Ruggiero and James Waterston as members of Keating’s class.

Beyond Williams’ performance, Dead Poets Society became known for its themes of individuality, conformity, friendship and the pressure young people face when trying to determine their own futures.

More than three decades later, its message continues to resonate, making its first 4K release an opportunity for longtime fans to revisit the film with upgraded picture and sound.

Mrs. Doubtfire Makes Its 4K Debut

Williams showed a completely different side of his talents four years later with Mrs. Doubtfire.

Directed by Chris Columbus and released in 1993, the family comedy stars Williams as Daniel Hillard, a divorced father desperate to spend more time with his children. His solution is as ridiculous as it is memorable.

With the help of an elaborate disguise, Daniel transforms himself into Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, a British housekeeper who is hired by his unsuspecting ex-wife, Miranda, played by Sally Field.

What follows is a mix of physical comedy, improvisational energy, and heartfelt family drama that helped turn Mrs. Doubtfire into one of Williams’ signature films.

The performance earned Williams the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The movie also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup.

While the disguises and comedic set pieces remain central to the movie’s appeal, Mrs. Doubtfire also explores divorce, parenting, and the lengths a father will go to remain part of his children’s lives.

Mrs. Doubtfire Gets Collectible 4K Packaging

The physical 4K Ultra HD releases will feature new key art for both movies, but Mrs. Doubtfire is getting an especially playful presentation.

Its collectible 4K UHD packaging will feature dual artwork built around Williams’ transformation. The outer sleeve showcases Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire, while removing it reveals Daniel Hillard underneath.

It is a fitting presentation for a movie built around one of the most recognizable character transformations in Williams’ career.

Both Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire will also be available in 4K for the first time through digital retailers, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango.

With one film representing Williams at his most inspirational and dramatic and the other showcasing his unmatched comedic energy, the two releases offer a fitting celebration of the range that made him one of Hollywood’s most beloved performers.

When Do Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire Release in 4K?

Dead Poets Society and Mrs. Doubtfire will be available on 4K Ultra HD Digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on September 29, 2026.

Both releases feature 4K resolution, HDR, a wider color spectrum, and enhanced audio, marking the first time either Robin Williams classic has been available to own in 4K.
