Ryan Guzman Talks a “New Version” of Eddie and the Impact of 9-1-1 at RescueVerse NJ – INTERVIEW

Chatting with 9-1-1’s Ryan Guzman at RescueVerse!

Ryan Guzman stars as Eddie Diaz on 9-1-1, and while covering Creation Entertainment’s RescueVerse: A Salute to TV’s First Responders in New Jersey, I had the chance to ask the actor about Eddie’s season 9 journey, conventions, and more. New episodes of the ABC procedural drama premiere at 8 PM EST on Thursdays.

On “Día de los Muertos”

“That episode was very impactful on so many different levels and layers. One, that, man, I don’t know if I’ve seen a show celebrate my culture in such a positive, beautiful light, especially in the time that we’re in right now, like, that was much needed. It happened prior to all the other stuff, or maybe during the time, either way, it was one of those moments where me and many of the Latinos that were on the set were looking at each other just in kind of awe and being like, ‘Wow, we come from so much beauty and it’s a shame that we don’t highlight these beauties as much as we should.’ So, very grateful to 9-1-1 for highlighting that.”

He continued to express, “But yeah, like you said, there’s so many areas for Eddie of growth, where he didn’t do what he usually does, which is harm himself and go internal with it. He processed in live time with his son, with his tía, just like, with people that he cares about, and he took it in such stride that you saw the maturity in Eddie now, and you saw the growth, so now it’s a new version of Eddie that we’re witnessing in real time. That was just a pleasure to play.”

On Connecting With Fans

“I think that’s my favorite thing about these conventions is the interaction with those that are fans of the show, and to really understand what part of the show impacted them and where they went with that impact. So many people have either met friend groups and created some sense of community through the show, or earlier today, I was told that somebody had watched Eddie grow into becoming an EMT, and she’s now an EMT, about to be in the Bronx for her first shift ever next week, and she didn’t think that was possible without watching the show.

So, to hear something like that is like, this is actual change that we’re seeing in people’s lives, and it’s in such a way where I’ve dreamt about wanting to make the world a better place and be positive with my influence. I didn’t know that that was gonna come from 9-1-1 and me just being an actor, so I live in gratitude and I give all glory to God, and that being said, I’m so, again, grateful for the fans receiving the show the way they do.”

The RescueVerse tour continues with conventions in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 30-31 and Austin, Texas, on June 6-7.
