Se7en Returns: A Thrilling 4K Experience – Review

Why Se7en’s 4K restoration is a must-see for cinephiles.

David Fincher’s classic film, Se7en, is coming back to theaters to celebrate 30 years, with special IMAX showings starting January 3 in the U.S. and Canada, and then some international screenings. I felt disappointed because my closest IMAX theater wasn’t playing it. However, I got lucky with a 4K copy sent to me to experience at home. The restoration really took an already fantastic movie to the next level.

I’ve got a long history with Se7en, starting back when my parents rented it from Blockbuster. I was way too young to really get its dark themes, but it definitely stuck with me. That was my first taste of David Fincher. He would later make Fight Club, one of my all-time favorites, kickstarting my love for films. Rewatching Se7en nearly 30 years later was just as intense and surprising as I remembered.

The film follows Detectives Mills (Brad Pitt) and Somerset (Morgan Freeman) as they track a meticulous serial killer whose crimes are inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins. The stellar cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow as Mills’ wife, Tracy, and Kevin Spacey as the chilling and enigmatic John Doe.

The film’s haunting atmosphere, complemented by Andrew Kevin Walker’s brilliant screenplay, creates a gripping and unforgettable experience. It’s no wonder the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing and a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The 4K restoration was done from the original camera negative.

Fincher himself oversaw this process. It really boosts every part of this dark psychological thriller. The visuals are incredibly clear and detailed, keeping the film’s gritty vibe while adding more depth to its shadowy atmosphere. The sound design is top-notch, too, pulling viewers into every tense moment. Even though the graphic scenes are still pretty unsettling, the enhanced detail makes them hit even harder, making it hard to look away.

Revisiting Se7en in this format reminded me why I’m eager to share it with as many people as possible. It’s not just one of the best films of its genre; it’s one of the best films ever made. Fincher’s meticulous direction, outstanding performances, and hauntingly effective narrative ensure that Se7en remains a defining entry in the psychological thriller genre.

Whether you revisit it or experience it for the first time, this 4K release is an incredible way to appreciate Fincher’s vision. It is the ultimate way to see his work. Se7en is a flawless masterpiece. You can pre-order your copy here.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
