Seann William Scott and Daryl ‘Chill’ Mitchell Talk Shifting Gears and Reuniting with Tim Allen

Why Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears is a must-watch for car lovers and sitcom fans.

Tim Allen is back with his signature charm and love for cars in Shifting Gears, a new sitcom premiering January 8 on ABC, with episodes available on Hulu the following day. The series follows Matt (Allen), a widowed and headstrong owner of a classic car restoration shop, who finds his life turned upside down when his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings) and her children move in with him. A heartfelt and humorous journey of restoration ensues—both for cars and family bonds.

Joining Allen in the shop are Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. For Mitchell, who famously starred alongside Allen in Galaxy Quest, reuniting with the actor was a nostalgic and fulfilling experience. “It’s come full circle for me,” Mitchell shared, adding that the connection between them was rekindled when producers realized their shared history. “They didn’t even initially consider that Tim and I worked together until it dawned on them later. Tim was all in—he’s my man!”

Mitchell also reminisced about the enduring legacy of Galaxy Quest, revealing that fans still hold the sci-fi classic close to their hearts. “At a Star Trek convention in Vegas, they played the movie—it’s seen as one of the best space films ever made. If there’s ever a sequel, I’ll be the first on board!”

On set, the chemistry among the cast was evident.

Scott, stepping into his first multicam sitcom role, spoke about how much fun he’s having. “The process is completely different, but I’m loving every second of it,” he said. Scott credited showrunner Michelle Nader for helping him shape a humorous and enigmatic character. He also expressed admiration for Mitchell, saying their professional camaraderie made every scene a joy. “I’m constantly trying not to laugh at Chill’s lines. He’s brilliant.”

For Mitchell, the authenticity of the garage set was another highlight. “Tim’s a car guy—he doesn’t mess around,” he said, describing the functioning lifts and meticulously designed interiors. Many of the show’s cars belong to Allen, adding a personal touch. Scott revealed that one of the vehicles is worth a cool million dollars. “We were even warned not to lean on it!”

Shifting Gears promises to resonate with car enthusiasts and sitcom lovers alike, combining Tim Allen’s trademark humor with heartfelt storytelling. Whether restoring a Chevelle or a father-daughter relationship, this show is about second chances and building something beautiful—one part at a time.

Mark your calendars for the series premiere and prepare for a ride full of laughs, family, and horsepower.
