The hand-drawn adaptation of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice expands Wolf and Kuro’s story with an episodic anime series.
FromSoftwares’s most notable shinobi will finally get his dues this January. Crunchyroll recently announced that Sekiro: No Defeat, the anime adaptation based on the award-winning Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, will premiere in January 2027. In addition to the release date, a new poster for Sekiro: No Defeat was also released, focusing on its two main characters, Wolf and Kuro.
All eight episodes will exclusively premiere on the platform in January 2027. Furthermore, due to popular demand in Japan, Sekiro: No Defeat will continue its theatrical run there. Plus, there will also be additional content beyond its theatrical run.
Sekiro: No Defeat expands the story of the game’s protagonist, Wolf, as he sets out to rescue his lord, but will unknowingly change the fate of his clan. The logline reads that it is a “a tale of loyalty, blood, and sacrifice set in a fantastical reimagining of Sengoku-era Japan. The expanded episodic format will offer audiences an even deeper experience of Wolf and Kuro’s journey.”
The game’s logline reads: “You are the ‘one-armed wolf’, a disgraced and disfigured warrior rescued from the brink of death. Bound to protect a young lord who is the descendant of an ancient bloodline, you become the target of many vicious enemies, including the dangerous Ashina clan. When the young lord is captured, nothing will stop you on a perilous quest to regain your honor, not even death itself.”
The series recently screened as part of Annecy’s “Feature Films: Midnight Specials” program.
It made its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival. As for the game the series is based on, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice sold over 10 million copies globally. It won Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2019 in addition to numerous nominations.
The series produced by animation studios KADOKAWA, Qzil.la and ARCH under a fully hand-drawn style. It was first announced at Gamescom 2025 and later teased at Anime NYC 2025, though details were kept under wraps at the time. However, the latest trailer for the series was released earlier this year, giving players and fans an action-packed look at the visuals and characters of Sekiro: No Defeat.
The main cast of Sekiro: No Defeat includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina. The series is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna (Hori and Miyamura) and written by Takuya Satou (Fate/stay night). All character designs in the anime were created by Takahiro Kishida (Haikyuu!!).
The production team includes deputy director Shunsuke Fukui, chief animation director Kaito Moki, action animation director Takashi Mukoda, art director Yuji Kaneko, color designer Azusa Sasaki, cinematographer Keisuke Nozawa, editor Yoshinori Murakami, sound director Yasushi Nagura and composer Shuta Hasunuma.
Sekiro: No Defeat premieres on Crunchyroll in January 2027.
