DreamWorks Animation’s beloved fairy tale adventure returns with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and hours of bonus features.
The animated classic that turned the fairy tale formula upside down is returning home with a new anniversary release.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will release Shrek: 25th Anniversary Edition on 4K Ultra HD, Digital and as a limited-edition Steelbook on Tuesday, November 3. The new edition celebrates 25 years of the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation comedy with a newly remastered presentation and fresh bonus content.
The 4K remaster will feature Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, giving Shrek’s swamp, the kingdom of Duloc and the film’s memorable musical moments an upgraded home entertainment presentation.
Shrek Celebrates 25 Years With a New Retrospective
The anniversary release includes “Origin of an Ogre,” a new 30-minute retrospective featuring members of the original creative team. The filmmakers look back at the origins of Shrek and share stories about making the groundbreaking animated adventure.
Released in 2001, Shrek introduced audiences to a hero unlike any other. The film follows a solitary ogre whose peaceful life is disrupted when Lord Farquaad banishes a large group of fairy tale characters to his swamp.
Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona and return her to Farquaad in exchange for getting his home back. He reluctantly begins the quest alongside Donkey, whose nonstop talking and loyalty slowly break through the ogre’s guarded personality.
Mike Myers leads the voice cast as Shrek alongside Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. The cast helped create characters who would remain instantly recognizable more than two decades later.
The movie combined fairy tale satire, pop culture references, heart and a soundtrack packed with memorable songs. Its humor reached adults without losing the younger audience, helping DreamWorks Animation establish a franchise that could stand apart from traditional animated fairy tales.
Shrek Made Academy Awards History
Shrek won the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, beating Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. during the category’s inaugural year.
The film’s success launched three direct sequels, beginning with Shrek 2 in 2004. Shrek the Third followed in 2007 before Shrek Forever After arrived in 2010.
The franchise also expanded through holiday specials, television projects, theme park attractions and two theatrical Puss in Boots spin-offs. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish brought audiences back to the larger Shrek universe in 2022 and renewed excitement for another adventure in Far Far Away.
Shrek 5 Will Bring the Original Cast Back
The anniversary arrives while DreamWorks Animation prepares to continue the main series with Shrek 5.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will return as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Zendaya joins them as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo will voice the couple’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.
Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing the long-awaited sequel. Vernon previously co-directed Shrek 2 and voiced Gingy, while Dohrn worked on multiple earlier installments and voiced Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After.
Voice recording for the sequel has been completed, bringing the franchise closer to its first main theatrical installment in 17 years. Shrek 5 is scheduled to open in theaters on June 30, 2027.
Before the new chapter begins, the 25th Anniversary Edition offers fans another chance to revisit the movie that introduced Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Far Far Away to the world.
