Nintendo explains why its upcoming live-action movie does not have a subtitle and teases the Triforce’s important role.
Nintendo has officially revealed the title and logo for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. The announcement arrived during the Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct presentation. The movie is officially titled The Legend of Zelda, without an additional subtitle separating it from the larger franchise.
According to the presentation, that decision was intentional. Audiences will understand why the movie does not have a subtitle after seeing the finished film.
The Legend of Zelda will open in theaters on April 30, 2027.
The Legend Of Zelda Brings Link And Zelda To Theaters
The upcoming movie marks the first time Link and Princess Zelda will lead a live-action theatrical adventure.
The film from Director Wes Ball is based on Nintendo’s action-adventure game franchise, which began in 1986 and has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Nintendo and Sony Pictures are bringing the series to the big screen following four decades of games, characters and evolving versions of Hyrule.
Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will star as Link.
Bragason previously appeared in Renegade Nell and The Jetty. Ainsworth is known for playing Miles in The Haunting of Bly Manor and providing the voice of Pinocchio in Disney’s live-action remake.
The Legend Of Zelda Will Tell An Original Story
The live-action movie will not directly adapt one specific Zelda game. Instead, it will tell an original story based on the characters, ideas and mythology developed throughout the franchise’s 40-year history.
Nintendo described the movie as an original artistic work worthy of The Legend of Zelda series. Its story will pull from the many adventures and concepts that have shaped Hyrule since the first game was released in 1986.
The approach gives the filmmakers room to use familiar pieces of Zelda mythology without being limited to recreating a single game. It could also explain why the title does not reference Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Twilight Princess or another individual chapter.
Nintendo did not reveal additional story details during the presentation. However, one of the franchise’s most recognizable symbols will be central to the movie.
The Triforce Will Have A Special Role
The Triforce will play a special role in The Legend of Zelda.
The sacred relic traditionally represents Power, Wisdom and Courage. Those qualities are commonly connected to Ganondorf, Princess Zelda and Link across different eras of the series.
Nintendo stopped short of explaining how the Triforce will factor into the live-action story. Its importance suggests the movie will embrace the larger mythology that has connected many of Link and Zelda’s adventures over the past four decades.
More information about the story, characters and world will be revealed as the movie moves closer to its theatrical release.
