Sophie Turner Steps Into Lara Croft Boots in First-Look Photo for Prime Video’s “Tomb Raider”

Prime Video’s “Tomb Raider” starts filming with a first-look image of Sophie Turner.

Amazon MGM Studios has started production on Prime Video’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” series and marked the moment with a first-look image of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft.

The image highlights several iconic elements associated with Lara’s video game look, signaling a clear embrace of the character’s classic adventurer identity. It positions Turner’s Croft as a modern take that still honors the franchise’s most recognizable visual cues.

The Prime Video series “Tomb Raider” is based on the long-running video game franchise centered on Lara Croft, a world-famous archaeologist whose globe-hopping adventures routinely lead her into ancient mysteries, dangerous enemies, and high-stakes discoveries.

A Stacked Cast Joins Turner’s Lara Croft

Turner stars as Lara Croft alongside Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

The series is led by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Chad Hodge joins as co-showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan Van Tulleken will direct and executive produce.

The Video Game Legacy Behind “Tomb Raider”

“Tomb Raider” became one of gaming’s most influential action-adventure series after its debut in the 1990s. Lara Croft quickly became a pop culture icon, known for a mix of brains, bravery, and athleticism, and for a love of ancient history that often puts her in mortal danger.

Over time, the franchise reinvented itself through new generations of games. A major reboot era began in 2013, reframing Lara through an origin story and a more grounded survival tone. That modern run broadened the character’s emotional range while keeping the core hook intact: puzzles, traps, ruins, and the thrill of discovery.

Prime Video’s series now has decades of lore, locations, and mythology to draw from, giving the adaptation plenty of room to shape a fresh story while staying tied to the franchise’s DNA.

Previous “Tomb Raider” Movies Set the Stage

Lara Croft previously made the leap to the big screen in the early 2000s, with Angelina Jolie starring in “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life.” Those films leaned into larger-than-life action and cemented Lara as a blockbuster-ready character.

A later reboot arrived in 2018, starring Alicia Vikander as Croft, aiming for a more grounded, origin-driven version of the hero.

Now, Turner becomes the latest actor to step into one of gaming’s most recognizable roles as Prime Video’s “Tomb Raider” moves forward in production with Amazon MGM Studios.
