STAR FOX Soars Back in Epic Nintendo Switch 2 Revival With Co-Op Combat, PvP Battles, and a Stunning Cinematic Overhaul

STAR FOX reignites Nintendo 64 nostalgia on Switch 2.

For years, Nintendo fans wondered when Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team would finally return in a major way. During today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo finally answered that question with a reveal that instantly became one of the showcase’s biggest surprises.

STAR FOX officially launches June 25 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing the legendary sci-fi franchise back with explosive aerial combat, modern multiplayer features, cinematic narrative, and one of the most impressive visual upgrades the series has ever received.

Built as a reimagining of the beloved Star Fox 64, the new game blends classic arcade-style dogfighting with modern Nintendo Switch 2 technology. The reveal trailer showcased massive battles across the Lylat System, including upgraded versions of Corneria, Zoness, Sector Y, and Fichina, all rebuilt with dramatically refined detail, lighting, and scale.

Most importantly, though, it still feels unmistakably like STAR FOX.

Fox barrels through enemy fire in his Arwing. Falco talks trash on comms. Peppy delivers tactical advice. Slippy sounds like he’s seconds away from another disaster. Nintendo clearly understands what made the franchise click in the first place, and this reveal looks focused on preserving that identity as it expands the experience in meaningful ways.

STAR FOX Brings Back Classic Gameplay With Modern Upgrades

At its core, STAR FOX remains an action-heavy space shooter built around fast reflexes, cinematic missions, and branching pathways through the Lylat System.

Players once again take control of Fox McCloud as he leads Team Star Fox against the evil Andross, whose forces threaten the entire galaxy. Nintendo confirmed returning gameplay mechanics including barrel rolls, boosts, laser blasts, midair braking, and somersault maneuvers.

However, the gameplay reveal also showed expanded freedom during combat encounters, larger battle arenas, and more dynamic stage design than previous entries.

Campaign Mode allows players to tackle different routes depending on performance and mission choices. Concealed paths, alternate objectives, and unlockable stages return, giving longtime fans even more reasons to replay missions multiple times.

Nintendo also confirmed Easy, Normal, and unlockable Expert difficulty settings.

The Visual Overhaul Feels Like a Massive Leap for the Franchise

The biggest immediate difference is the presentation.

This is easily the most cinematic STAR FOX game Nintendo has ever produced. Character models have been completely redesigned while still honoring their classic looks, and environments now feel larger, more alive, and far much more captivating.

Corneria features full-scale aerial warfare happening across massive skylines. Zoness looks darker and more polluted than ever before. Asteroid fields explode with debris and lighting effects that showcase the power of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.

Nintendo also confirmed:

  • Fully voiced dialogue
  • Expanded mission briefings
  • New cinematic cutscenes
  • Additional character interactions
  • A sweeping orchestral soundtrack

For many longtime fans, Star Fox 64 was one of Nintendo’s first truly cinematic experiences. This new version appears designed to capture that same feeling again for a modern audience.

Pilot-and-Gunner Co-Op Could Change Everything

One of the reveal’s biggest surprises was the introduction of pilot-and-gunner cooperative gameplay.

Using Joy-Con 2 functionality, players can now split responsibilities inside the Arwing. One player controls flying while the second handles aiming and firing duties.

The feature works locally and online through Nintendo’s GameChat and GameShare systems, creating a completely new way to experience the campaign.

Nintendo also revealed new Joy-Con 2 mouse controls to improve precise aiming during gameplay sections, letting players to smoothly transition between standard controls and motion-based targeting.

It is one of the smartest modern additions Nintendo could have made to the series because it keeps the arcade-style gameplay intact while making the experience feel fresh.

STAR FOX Battle Mode Adds Chaotic 8-Player PvP Combat

Nintendo is also significantly expanding multiplayer with a brand-new Battle Mode supporting up to eight players.

Players can split into Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf for objective-based 4-vs-4 dogfights across multiple maps inspired by classic locations from the franchise.

Modes include:

  • Capturing control zones on Corneria
  • Collecting energy crystals on Fichina
  • Recovering stolen cargo in Sector Y

Online matchmaking, private lobbies, local multiplayer, and GameShare support were all confirmed during the presentation.

For a franchise that has traditionally focused heavily on single-player action, the multiplayer expansion feels surprisingly ambitious.

Nintendo Is Finally Treating STAR FOX Like a Major Franchise Again

What stands out most about this reveal is confidence.

This does not feel like a small experimental release or a nostalgia-driven side project. Nintendo presented STAR FOX like a major franchise returning to the spotlight alongside Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong.

That alone makes this reveal feel significant.

The franchise has spent years sitting mostly dormant while fans continued asking for a true comeback. Now, with a cinematic presentation, expanded gameplay systems, multiplayer support, and Nintendo Switch 2 technology behind it, STAR FOX finally looks positioned for a genuine return.

Honestly, seeing Fox McCloud back in the cockpit again just feels right.
