The Mandalorian & Grogu Footage Reveals Rotta’s Fate Since Clone Wars

New Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu footage reveals Rotta’s return, the Hutt Cartel’s rise, and the Mandalorian’s next mission with Grogu.

Everyone’s favorite spacefaring mercenary in Star Wars (and his adorable companion) will be coming back, but a fan-exclusive preview finally reveals what the Mandalorian’s got in store.

On May 4, better known as Star Wars Day, Lucasfilm hosted a nationwide IMAX fan event preview for The Mandalorian and Grogu. Although fans got hints at what was in store thanks to CinemaCon, this event presented fans with 25 minutes of footage from the film.

Although it still keeps much of the film’s story under wraps, this footage shows off what the Mandalorian has to do next and who his enemies really are.

CinemaCon Footage Recapped

The first few minutes reveal what the Mandalorian has been up to since the events of the show. He’s become a part of the New Republic, hunting down Imperial warlords across the galaxy who intend to build a new Galactic Empire.

He tracks one of these warlords, who demands a council of township leaders to continue working for him. However, the Mandalorian eliminates the warlord’s soldiers, one by one, in a stealthy attack sequence. There’s even a mouse droid that tries spying on the hunter, only to be caught and destroyed by Grogu. The warlord does escape, but only for a brief moment.

The Mandalorian steals an AT-RT, using it to slide down the mountain and ambush the warlord’s transports. He takes out the walkers individually, attacking the troopers in a hallway fight-esque sequence until he gets to the warlord’s transport. Unfortunately for him, the warlord tries to make one last escape, flying away on his personal escape pod as the walker is set to explode.

In a last-minute sequence, the Mandalorian, with a pestering Grogu, manages to blow up the warlord and gets rescued by Zeb (Steve Blum). Both of them return to Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver), who just seems a little displeased about Mando’s methods. However, she tells him of a threat they’ve been looking for: the elusive Commander Coin.

At CinemaCon we saw the first half of this footage, but the second half was shown to fans everywhere.

Mandalorian and Grogu New Footage Showcases the New Hutt Cartel and Rotta’s Infamy

To help him out, Ward gives the Mandalorian a newly refurbished Razor Crest, which he uses to travel to Nal Hutta, the home of the Hutts, which was best seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Zeb also joins as his pilot while Mando explains to Grogu how to fit his tiny armor.

Jabba’s twin cousins have taken over Nal Hutta with their repurposed droid army, built from old Confederacy droids. There’s also a sequence that sees the Mandalorian warning Grogu about the other Hutts, which are seen in full display, sleeping and chugging food down. The Mandalorian eventually meets the twins, who give him his objective: bring Rotta, Jabba’s son, home. A live-action model of the young Rotta is also presented via hologram.

The Mandalorian travels to a city-planet searching for Rotta, coming across Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, a shopkeeper who acts very nervous when the Hutts are brought up in conversation. He acts very much like Sykes from Shark Tale, but with a slight timidness. However, when the Mandalorian asks about Rotta, Hugo shares where he’ll be next quite easily.

The main duo finds Rotta fighting against a warrior, who is eventually defeated after his weapon breaks and is crushed by the buff Hutt. The Mandalorian seems to act slightly hesitant after witnessing Rotta’s win, but what happens next remains to be seen.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Will See the New Republic Fighting the Hutt Cartel

Given the footage that was presented at the fan event, as well as what was in the teaser after, it’s very likely that this duo will find themselves causing more trouble. In fact, what they do with Rotta might lead to the New Republic fighting against the Hutt Cartel’s forces.

Since the New Republic is fighting the Hutt twins on their homefront of Nal Hutta, it can be assumed that what the Mandalorian does with Rotta will end up in an unexpected way. Some fans believe that Rotta will be taken to the New Republic instead of the twins, which results in this conflict happening in the first place.

Nonetheless, whatever happens to Rotta, it feels certain that the Mandalorian and Grogu will have a lot to deal with if they want to find the Empire’s missing player.

The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22.
