New Star Wars film ‘Starfighter’ to hit theaters in 2027.

At Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni announced a brand-new theatrical release set in the Star Wars galaxy. Titled “Star Wars: Starfighter,” the all-new film will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling. It’s scheduled to open exclusively in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The upcoming film will be a standalone adventure. It takes place roughly five years after the events of 2019’s “Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.” It will introduce all-new characters and explore a time period in the galaxy that has never been seen on screen before. Production on the film is expected to begin this fall.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy. He is known for directing blockbusters like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and serving as a producer on Netflix’s hit series “Stranger Things.” He will now step behind the camera for his first trip to a galaxy far, far away. Ryan Gosling, who received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his role in 2024’s “Barbie,” will lead the cast. Gosling’s other notable credits include “La La Land,” “The Notebook” and “Crazy Stupid Love.”
“Star Wars: Starfighter” marks the next big step for Lucasfilm’s theatrical future as the franchise continues to expand in new directions.
