The First Angry Birds Movie Explained Why The Birds Were Angry
The Angry Birds franchise first made the jump from mobile screens to theaters with The Angry Birds Movie in 2016.
The first film introduced audiences to Bird Island, a peaceful home filled with flightless birds. Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, was an outsider with a serious anger problem. He lived apart from the rest of the island and struggled to fit in with the cheerful birds around him.
Things changed when a group of mysterious green pigs arrived on the island. At first, the pigs seemed friendly, but Red, Chuck, and Bomb began to suspect that something was wrong. Their instincts proved right when the pigs revealed their plan to steal the birds’ eggs.
The movie turned the simple mobile game rivalry between birds and pigs into a full animated origin story. It explained why the birds became angry and why they launched themselves into action against the pigs.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 Turned Enemies Into Allies
The franchise continued with The Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019.

The sequel picked up after the birds and pigs had already become longtime enemies. Red had become a hero on Bird Island, but his new status was challenged when a larger threat emerged.
A new villain, Zeta, began attacking both Bird Island and Pig Island from a frozen third island. Her plan forced the birds and pigs to do something they never expected: work together.
Red, Chuck, Bomb, Silver, and Mighty Eagle joined forces with the pigs to stop Zeta and save their homes. The sequel expanded the world beyond the original bird-versus-pig conflict and gave the franchise a bigger adventure with more characters, more comedy, and more emotional stakes.
Angry Birds Became A Mobile Game Phenomenon
Before the movies, Angry Birds became one of the biggest mobile game franchises in the world.
The original game launched in 2009 and built its popularity around a simple but addictive idea. Players used a slingshot to launch birds at structures filled with green pigs. Each bird had a different power, and every level challenged players to knock down the pigs in the smartest way possible.
The game’s colorful characters, easy gameplay, and quick level design helped it spread fast across phones and tablets. It became one of the defining mobile games of its era and grew into a full entertainment brand.
Angry Birds expanded into sequels, spin-off games, animated shorts, TV projects, toys, merchandise, theme park attractions, and theatrical movies. Red, Chuck, Bomb, and the pigs became instantly recognizable characters far beyond the game itself.
The Third Movie Brings Red Into Fatherhood
The Angry Birds Movie 3 gives Red a very different challenge from the first two films.
In the first movie, Red had to prove that his anger could be useful when Bird Island was threatened. In the second movie, he had to learn how to share the spotlight and work with former enemies. Now, the third movie puts him in the middle of fatherhood while another world-saving mission unfolds around him.
That setup gives the sequel a new family angle while keeping the core of the franchise intact. Red is still angry. The world is still chaotic. The birds are still being pulled into a huge adventure. This time, though, Red’s biggest test may be happening at home.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 opens in theaters on Dec. 23, 2026.
