The Bondsman: Jennifer Nettles on Demons, Music, and Life After The Righteous Gemstones – Interview

Jennifer Nettles on The Bondsman, music, and moving from televangelist to demon hunter.

Blumhouse Television’s latest supernatural thriller, The Bondsman, is here, bringing Kevin Bacon back from the dead. Playing the resurrected bounty hunter Hub Halloran, Bacon leads a cast that includes The Righteous Gemstones alum Jennifer Nettles, who transitions from televangelist antics to demon-hunting drama. I caught up with Nettles to talk about her new role, working alongside Bacon, and how music continues to shape her acting journey.

From The Righteous Gemstones to The Bondsman

Fans of The Righteous Gemstones are still mourning the end of the hit HBO series, and Nettles is right there with them. “Listen, I am recovering as well,” she admitted. “But I joke that I go from televangelist to demon hunting. I’ve got range!”

Though her Bondsman character, Marianne, is far from her Gemstones role, Nettles pointed out some interesting parallels. “Both of these women are very grounded, very family-oriented, and moms,” she noted. “And while you could probably call the Gemstone children demons, they’re technically not—though they act like it sometimes.”

Music’s Role in The Bondsman

One of the most exciting aspects of The Bondsman is how music weaves into the storytelling. This was a dream opportunity for Nettles—especially since she and Bacon got to write music for the show. “It’s so unique because the music was written specifically for the characters,” she explained. “It adds another layer of depth to the story. Kevin and I had an act together in the backstory, and you’ll get to see glimpses of that.”

Nettles also revealed that the Bondsman cast was full of music lovers. “There was lots of nerding out, especially in the mornings in the hair and makeup trailer,” she laughed. “We’d be sharing songs back and forth, putting headphones on—so much fun.”

A New Favorite Family

As The Bondsman delves into themes of redemption, family, and fate, Nettles is confident that audiences will be drawn into its thrilling, chaotic family dynamics. And for those still feeling the void left by The Righteous Gemstones, there’s hope. “The Bondsman family has officially stolen the top spot for me,” I admitted. “I love it! I’ll take it,” Nettles responded with a smile. With all eight episodes now streaming, fans are already eager for a second season. Nettles shares the sentiment. “I hope we don’t have to wait long either,” she said.
