While some might expect a tech-savvy collector, McFarlane admits, “I’m not a video gamer. I probably buy the most are board games.” Despite the rapid evolution of entertainment media, it’s clear that his roots in traditional, tactile experiences still play a significant role in his life. “I just got a notice that when I get home from NYCC, I’ll have a new game waiting for me. I pre-ordered it three and a half years ago, so it’s been a long time coming,” he shared enthusiastically.

Though McFarlane has dabbled in multiple creative arenas—from comics and toys to music videos—there’s still one area he’s eager to explore: directing a feature-length film. “The only itch I have that I hopefully would like to scratch before I die is to direct a full-length feature film,” he said. Despite having directed short films and music videos, he remains curious about tackling a longer format. “I’m just curious whether I have the skill to be able to do it for, you know, an hour and a half,” he mused.

Spawn Film: The Ongoing Journey

McFarlane candidly discussed the challenges of bringing this project to fruition. “Hollywood tests my patience,” he said with a laugh. “We began the process in a meaningful way in 2017. We’re seven years into it… I keep seeing it sort of around the corner, and then something else comes up.” Despite the frustrations, McFarlane remains optimistic, though he admits that his wife advises him to stay quiet until the project is finally complete. “I don’t control that city,” he remarked, highlighting the complexities of Hollywood production.
